1. Applications Sought for the 2011 Saeeda Peermahomed Award

 

International Student Life and the Peermahomed Selection Committee at The University of Georgia are pleased to solicit nominations from the UGA community for the 2011 Saeeda Peermahomed Award.

 

The Saeeda Peermahomed Award is made possible by the Peermahomed Family and is given in memory of Saeeda Peermahomed. Saeeda was a University of Georgia student from India who was studying to obtain a Masters degree in Journalism when she was killed in a tragic automobile accident in North Georgia in 1979. This award is given in Saeeda’s memory to honor the goals of inter-cultural exchange for which she stood.

 

The annual award is given to an international student in recognition of outstanding scholarship, leadership and service in the field of international education. Recipients should be undergraduate or graduate international students at the University of Georgia and should have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5.

2. 2011 International Street Festival: Bringing the World to Athens!

ISL will be hosting the 13th Annual International Street Festival this Saturday, April 9th, 2011 from 12 – 5 p.m. on College Avenue between Broad and Clayton Streets in downtown Athens.

This year’s Festival promises to be exciting and dynamic and will include musical and dance performances from more than 15 countries. More than 30 international and multicultural student organizations will have educational displays including artifacts, fashions, interactive games and cultural demonstrations.

The event is FREE and open to the general public. Last year over 5,000 people attended the International Street Festival, and we hope to see you attend this year on April 9th! Flyers for the festival are attached to this email - please forward them to your family and friends.

3. Important Tax Workshop Update

 

There are only two non-resident tax workshops remaining!!

 

The final workshops will be happening as follows:

 

This week: Coffee Hour walk-in session:  Friday, April 8th 2011 from 11:30 am - 1:15 pm in the Memorial Hall Ballroom balcony (the same room as Coffee Hour).

 

The FINAL non-resident tax workshop will occur on Wednesday, April 13th, from 3:30 - 6:30 p.m. in Adinkra Hall (4th Floor of Memorial Hall).

 

These are the final two dates in which we will be able to assist you with your tax paperwork. Don't forget to attend!

 

Email [log in to unmask] with any questions. Remember that these workshops are for non-resident UGA international students to get help with their Georgia state tax forms. Please be sure to have completed CINTAX prior to attending AND bring all your federal tax and immigration documents with you when you come!

4. Apply to be an ISL World Leader for Fall 2011!

 

Are you interested in learning about many different cultures?  Do you want to have friends from around the world?  Do you want to help international students acclimate to the University of Georgia?  Well, here’s your chance! Apply to become a World Leader. World Leaders are students who assist with the International Student Life fall orientation for incoming international students.

 

International Student Orientation and training for Fall 2011 will be held July 30, 2011 through August 8, 2011.  Please share this announcement with your listservs, friends, and contacts.

 

This year’s application form is attached and the deadline to apply is Monday, April 11th, at 4:59 p.m.

5. Participate in ISL’s Spring Graduation Ceremony

 

Are you an international student, ISL student leader, or student who has contributed to the international community AND is about to graduate? If so, sign up for International Student Life’s Spring Graduation Ceremony!

 

The International Student Life Office cordially invites you to participate in International Student Life’s International Graduation Ceremony on May 12, 2010.

 

This ceremony is a free celebration of your accomplishments at the University of Georgia. The program is for all international students, International Student Life student leaders and their families and friends to honor our students’ achievements in an intimate atmosphere.

7. Dawgs for Japan - Button Sales

 

Dawgs for Japan will be selling buttons this week at Tate, 10am to 3pm. Buttons are $2 each and all proceeds will go to the Japanese Red Cross. There will also be origami paper there for you to fold cranes, which they hope to get at least 1000 of those to send over to Japan. Please check out their website (http://www.dawgsforjapan.uga.edu/) and if you are interested in volunteering at the button table, you can find a volunteer form on the website.

8. Interfaith Cultural Organization: Movie Screening

 

Movie Screening: Kelebek (The Butterfly)
April 6th, 7:00pm, Tate Theatre, UGA

The Interfaith Cultural Organization (IFCO)  is proud to show the Kelebek Movie in the Tate Theatre.

Looking from a different angle to the 9/11 attacks, the movie depicts how just one person can change the destiny of the world through the story of Yusuf and his friends, who go to Afghanistan during the 1996 civil war with the encouragement of their Mevlevi sheikh in order to be useful in a situation where thousands have been killed or left homeless. As the young men prepare for the journey, Osama Bin Laden is also crossing the border into Afghanistan, home of his new camp. He is just one of the thousands of people that Yusuf and his friends encounter in Afghanistan.

9. Phi Beta Delta International Honor Society - Seeking Members

 

Phi Beta Delta, Tau Chapter, an Honor Society for International Scholars, is seeking qualified students, faculty and staff to be inducted into the Society.  The purpose of Phi Beta Delta is to bring together UGA students and faculty that are dedicated to scholarship and service in the field of international education and to advance international engagement at UGA.  The membership criteria are as follows:   Graduate students must have a GPA of 3.5 and undergraduate students must have a GPA of 3.0.  Students must also have had significant involvement in international activities of some sort, and hold sophomore, junior or senior class standing.  Phi Beta Delta is open to both U.S. and international students and scholars.

 

This is an outstanding opportunity to meet amazing students and faculty that have a common goal of participating in international educational activities, while making your impact on internationalizing the University of Georgia. Members of Phi Beta Delta will organize and participate in activities that include: 

·         International film festivals

·         Brown bag talks on international experiences

·         Informational sessions on international careers

·         Intercultural Dialogue Series

·         International social events

·         Other events of interest to members

The one-time $50 initiation fee includes, a personalized induction certificate, and a Phi Beta Delta medallion. The remaining $10 are used to for chapter dues.

10. Graduate School Scholarships 2011-2012

 

The Graduate School will offer ten scholarships for the 2011-2012 academic year. All awards require recipients to be registered as full-time students (12 graduate credit hours/semester) for the semesters in which they receive the award (fall/spring). Scholarships do not apply to summer semester. Complete application must be submitted by the appropriate graduate coordinator. A student summary page, (http://www.grad.uga.edu/scholarship.pdf) a letter of support from the graduate coordinator or major professor, a personal statement that addresses the requirements of the award, and a vitae are required for each application. Additional requirements for specific scholarships are listed below. The amount of the awards listed for each scholarship or fellowship are dependent on funds available after June 30, 2011.

 

Deadline for online submission of applications is Friday, April 15, 2011, 5:00 pm.

 

Alfred E. Brown Scholarship

This scholarship was established by Dr. Annella Brown, one of the first 10 female surgeons in the United States, in memory of her brother. Requirements are exemplary leadership, academic accomplishment, and a letter of support from the graduate coordinator (describing leadership qualities of nominated student). In addition, a statement from the student on career goals as well as personal and professional interests is required. Preference will be given to students from Laurens County, Georgia. One award of up to $1000 ($500/semester) is available.

 

J. William Fanning Graduate Fellowship

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide fellowship support to a student(s) in good standing with excellent leadership qualities and demonstrated financial need.  Requirements are exemplary leadership, academic accomplishment, letter of support from the graduate coordinator (describing leadership qualities of nominated student) and financial need demonstrated by FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Please refer to the Office of Student Financial Aid for additional information about determining financial need (http://www.uga.edu/osfa/20102011forms.html).  The fellowship may be renewed up to three years by reapplying, which requires a new fellowship application and continued financial need demonstrated by FAFSA.  Three awards of up to $5000 each ($2500/semester) are available.

 

Hamilton Lokey Graduate Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize an outstanding University of Georgia undergraduate student who wishes to continue his/her educational studies by enrolling in a graduate program at UGA beginning fall 2011. Students are required to have an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher. Preference is also given to students who have worked during their undergraduate career to help pay for educational costs; written documentation from the student’s employer is required. Requirements include a letter of support from the graduate coordinator and a statement from the student on career goals and professional interests. The scholarship may be renewed up to three years by reapplying, including certification of good academic standing. One award of up to $4000 ($2000/semester) is available.

 

George Hugh Boyd Memorial Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to attract and retain students who meet the high standards of Dr. Boyd, who dedicated his life to education and research.  Dr. Boyd was a former dean of the Graduate School.  Recipients of this award are expected to have high moral and academic standards and a philosophy of giving back to the community the best they have to offer.  They should be interested in the problems of the University and the nation, as well as the preservation of humankind and the environment.  Recipients of this award are known as the Boyd Scholars.  One award of up to $1000 ($500/semester) is available.

 

 

Beverly Hirsch Frank Graduate Fellowship for Women in Science

The purpose of this fellowship is to recruit, support, and encourage exceptional graduate-level study and research in all fields of life and physical sciences with emphasis in interdisciplinary and emerging fields.  This fellowship will be used as a “top up” or “add-on” award, with no additional work obligations, to be used to supplement a Graduate School or departmental research assistantship.  To qualify, departmental research assistantships must be funded at the same or higher levels as that of a Graduate School assistantship. One award of up to $1500 ($750/semester) is available.

 

Mary Erlanger Graduate Fellowship

The purpose of this fellowship is to encourage exceptional graduate-level study and research in any and all areas related to aspects of aging including, but not limited to, applied social sciences fields of gerontology, geriatrics, mental health, public health, social work, as well as interdisciplinary and emerging fields of study.  This fellowship will be used as a “top up” or “add-on” award, with no additional work obligations, to be used to supplement a Graduate School or departmental research assistantship.  To qualify, departmental research assistantships must be funded at the same or higher levels as that of a Graduate School assistantship. One award of up to $1000 ($500/semester) is available.

 

Dianne C. Davison Scholarship

The University Women's Club Scholarship Fund provides one scholarship in the name of the late Mrs. Fred Davison, wife of the President of the University of Georgia from 1967-1986, to a female graduate student who is a resident of Georgia. The Dianne C. Davison Scholar will be named by the Graduate School on behalf of the University Woman's Club. Criteria for nominations include being a female resident of Georgia (according to the UGA Registrar), having advanced to doctoral candidacy (form must be on file in the Graduate   School by the nomination deadline), conducting dissertation research during the year of the award, and maintaining a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 for graduate coursework.  A department may submit only one nominee for consideration by the review committee. One award of up to $2500 ($1250/semester) is available.

 

Michael A. Johnson Graduate Fellowship

This scholarship was established in memory of Michael A. Johnson, former Assistant Dean of the UGA Graduate School. The purpose of this scholarship is to recognize an outstanding doctoral student from an underrepresented group who has demonstrated excellent leadership qualities. The student must be a member of underrepresented group, have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, and have completed at least 2 semesters of doctoral coursework.  The University of Georgia Graduate School defines students who are from historically underrepresented backgrounds as those who self-identify with an ethnic/racial group, income background, or gender in a particular discipline that has not been traditionally represented in higher education. Under-represented also includes first generation and non-traditional age college students.  One award of up to $1000 ($500/semester) is available.

 

Submission of Nominations

 

Nomination packets must be submitted by the Graduate Coordinator or other staff member in the department. 

 

Each nomination packet should include:

§  Student Summary Page (http://www.grad.uga.edu/scholarship.pdf)

§  letter of recommendation from Graduate Coordinator or Major Professor

§  personal statement

§  vitae

§  additional documentation requested for a specific scholarship

 

To complete the nomination packet:

 

§  Work with your graduate coordinator to complete all required nomination materials

§  Save the required material for the application in the order listed above in one Adobe Acrobat file.  Name the file with the last name of the applicant, department, and name of scholarship for the which the student is applying

 

The deadline to submit the file is Friday, April 15, 2011 at 5:00 pm.

11. Athens Meets World Event

 

The Athens Meets World International Showcase will take place on April 8, 2011 from 8-10 p.m. in Tate II Grand Hall.  Come experience different cultures from around the world by enjoying food and entertainment!  Proceeds will help fund a study abroad trip for a UGA student from an Athens-area high school.  Tickets will be sold at the door for $5 for students and $10 for adults.  Contact the team at [log in to unmask] for more information.
