What is Travel Registration?

Travel registration is a free service provided by the U.S. Government to U.S. citizens who are traveling to, or living in, a foreign country. Registration allows you to record information about your trip abroad that the Department of State can use to assist you in case of an emergency, travel alerts, travel warnings, etc.

 Americans residing abroad can also get routine information from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. U.S. consular officers assist Americans who encounter serious legal, medical, or financial difficulties. Although consular officers cannot act as your legal counsel, they can provide the names of local attorneys and doctors, provide loans to destitute Americans, and provide information about dangerous conditions affecting your overseas travel or residence.

3.  UGA AT OXFORD ANNOUNCEMENTS – Come to England This Summer!

 The UGA at Oxford Program offers an exciting array of summer study abroad programs.

 UGA at Oxford Junemester: June 14 - 30

You will earn 6 hours of credit through WebCT classes that run throughout the 1st short session of summer. In addition, you will have ten days in England to participate in excursions that are associated with your course topic.  

 Oxford – Washington Summer Program:

June 9 – July 4 Washington D.C.

July 6 – July 30 Oxford, England

The program offers students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in D.C. through site visits and prominent guest speakers complimented by the chance to study abroad and take a course with an Oxford Professor.

 Franklin at Oxford Summer: July 4 – August 12

Live in a 16th-century walled Oxford University college in the heart of the city. All students will take 2 courses taught by Oxford University faculty while staying in dorm space normally occupied by Trinity College students.

 Grady at Oxford:  July 4 – August 12

Come to Oxford and take 1 course with an Oxford faculty member and one course, JRLC 5080, with Dr. JooYoung Kim, Grady College Professor. You will reside in the same space as the Franklin Program, a 16th-century walled Oxford University college in the heart of the city.

 Terry at Oxford: July 4 – August 12

Come to Oxford and take 1 course with an Oxford faculty member and one course, INTB 5100, with Dr. Marc Laplante, Terry College Professor. You will reside in the UGA at Oxford Center located one mile from city center, and have access to Trinity College Oxford, a 16th-century walled Oxford University college in the heart of the city.

 Any financial assistance normally available to defray costs at UGA should be available to apply toward Program costs. This includes money from HOPE, Stafford Loans, Pell Grants, Foundation Fellowships, and National Merit Scholarships.

 UGA at Oxford Financial Assistance Awards 2011-2012:
Thanks to the generous efforts of several UGA at Oxford supporters, we are proud to announce the availability of assistance funding available to students participating on Programs in the academic year 2011-2012. These funds will be awarded competitively on the basis of financial need and academic excellence.

 UGA Foundation Incentive Scholarship:

Several University of Georgia Foundation Incentive Scholarships will be offered during 2011-2012 by UGA at Oxford. These scholarships, ranging from $500-$1,000 each, are awarded from funds made available to us by the generosity of the UGA Foundation and will be awarded competitively on the basis of academic excellence and financial need.

5. NEW FEE FOR ISIC CARDS, AVAILABLE IN THE OFFICE OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION

The ISIC entitles students who are traveling abroad to discounts on airfare, travel, museums, and other activities. It also provides students with some basic health and accident insurance as well as evacuation and repatriation benefits should something happen while they are abroad. A great option for student travelers who are not participants in study abroad programs that provide insurance.

 In order to keep up with rising postage and other costs, effective immediately, the cost of ISIC (International Student Identification Cards) purchased through the Office of International Education will be $23.00 as opposed to $22.00.  This cost will be inclusive of mailing costs, in those cases in which the student needs the card mailed to his or her home address.

The USPS passport team is traveling to events in Georgia.  This is a quick way to submit your passport application.  Bring with you the following items:

-Passport Application

-Proof of U.S. citizenship

-Proof of identity

-Photocopy of valid photo ID (front and back)

-One passport color photo (photo must show clear likeness). Note: If you do not have a photo, this is offered for $15 at the event.

-Both parents or the legal guardian(s) for children under 16

8.  Athens Meets World International Showcase Campus Event

The Recreation and Leisure Studies program is planning an event to raise money to give to the Office of International Education to create a scholarship for a student who graduated from an Athens-area high school to study abroad.  We would appreciate your support of our cause and our event by sending the promo to the listserv.

The Athens Meets World International Showcase will take place on April 8, 2011 from 8-10 p.m. in Tate II Grand Hall.  Come experience different cultures from around the world by enjoying food and entertainment without leaving campus!  Proceeds will help fund a study abroad trip for a UGA student from an Athens-area high school.  Tickets will be sold at the door for $5 for students and $10 for adults.  Contact the team at [log in to unmask] for more information.

--D.  Studio Art Centers International – Full Tuition Opportunity

 Studio Art Centers International is pleased to announce a new full-tuition scholarship opportunity. This award will be offered for the first time in Fall 2011.

 The Award

The Full- Tuition Scholarship is currently worth $11,800 for the first semester of study at SACI. The scholarship is based on both demonstrated financial need and outstanding artistic and/or academic ability. It is intended to provide a talented student, who would otherwise not have the opportunity to study abroad, with the experience of studying at SACI in Florence.

 Eligibility:   The competition is open to students applying to SACI for a fall or spring term and whose institutions are members of the ICFAD alliance.

 Applying:  Students can apply for the program at www.saci-florence.edu.   In order to be considered for a scholarship, students will indicate on the application they are applying for a scholarship and are then required to submit the standard SACI application materials, proof of financial need in the form of a SAR (Student Aid Report) and a portfolio containing 15-20 images of their best artwork.

--E.  Study Abroad In Japan - Deadline April 8, 2011

The Bridging Scholarship program will award 60+ scholarships to American students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan during the 2010-2011 academic year or the Fall 2011 semester. Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study and attending any recognized exchange or independent program in Japan are eligible to apply for these scholarships.

Recipients of Bridging Scholarships will receive stipends ranging from $2,500 to $4,000, depending on the length of their study program in Japan.  Applicants will be notified of the results by May 30.  Selection will be based on academic potential and financial need. (Students studying in Japan during only the Spring 2012 semester should wait until fall of 2011 to apply.)

In addition, Morgan Stanley Japan will award two $7,500 scholarships to undergraduate students who will be studying abroad in Japan during the 2011-2012 academic year and who have an interest in economics and international finance. Applicants must submit an essay on one of several designated public-policy topics together with an application for the Bridging Scholarship program.

12.  TEACHING ABROAD GRANTS IN SPAIN – CULTURE AND LANGUAGE ASSISTANT OPENINGS

The program provides Spanish students and teachers of English or French an opportunity to broaden and increase their knowledge of the English or French language and North American culture through interaction with native speakers.

 

The Assistants will also have the opportunity to learn about the Spanish language and culture and use their experience upon their return to the United States or Canada, thus developing cultural understanding between the citizens of Spain and the United States of America and Canada.

The Spanish Autonomous Regions will assign all candidates, individually, an elementary or secondary school.  Candidates may not choose a particular city. The Ministry and some of the Regional Education Authorities will organize orientation seminars at the beginning of the school year.

13.  Phi Beta Delta, Tau Chapter, an Honor Society for International Scholars

This organization is seeking qualified students, faculty and staff to be inducted into the Society.  The purpose of Phi Beta Delta is to bring together UGA students and faculty that are dedicated to scholarship and service in the field of international education and to advance international engagement at UGA.  The membership criteria are as follows:   Graduate students must have a GPA of 3.5 and undergraduate students must have a GPA of 3.0.  Students must also have had significant involvement in international activities of some sort, and hold sophomore, junior or senior class standing.  Phi Beta Delta is open to both U.S. and international students and scholars.

This is an outstanding opportunity to meet amazing students and faculty that have a common goal of participating in international educational activities, while making your impact on internationalizing the University of Georgia. Members of Phi Beta Delta will organize and participate in activities that include:

·         International film festivals

·         Brown bag talks on international experiences

·         Informational sessions on international careers

·         Intercultural Dialogue Series

·         International social events

·         Other events of interest to members

Do you still want to talk about your study abroad experience? Need an interested audience for your study abroad stories and memories? Want to encourage other UGA students to study abroad?

The Office of International Education is looking for peer advisors for the 2010-2011 academic year. We have found that returned students are one of the best resources for encouraging more UGA students to study abroad. Peer advisors assist the study abroad staff by giving presentations about study abroad, leading discussions and serving on student panels. You can choose to participate in as many events as your schedule permits.
