1. Percentage Night - This Wednesday!


Hard at work studying for finals?! Come take a lunch (or dinner... or even snack) break at Moe's!


The Arab Cultural Association, Athens for Justice in Palestine and Persian Student Union will be holding a percentage day at Moe's on Baxter St. this Wednesday (Reading Day), December 6th from 10:30 am till 10:00 pm. Proceeds will go to decorating and funding entertainment and food for Middle Eastern Night (a dinner/entertainment night embracing Arab, Persian, and Palestinian culture), which will be on April 21, 2012.


Keep in mind that in order for us to collect the funds, you need to tell the cashier that you are there for Ethnic Night. And make sure that he/she places your receipt in the bucket at the cash register.


Also, no soliciting in or outside the store!! If anybody is caught advertising for the percentage event anywhere near the store, they will be asked to leave and the groups can possibly lose theirr funding!

Please come hungry!!!! And forward this event to all your friends in Athens!!!

 2. Help Victims of the Turkish Earthquake

The Turkish Student Association at UGA  is holding a fundraiser to help people who have suffered from the devastating earthquake in Turkey. More than 600 people died and thousands were injured in this earthquake. TSA is looking for other organizations' help!

TSA is ordering t-shirts to sell: if your organization promises to support the cause by purchasing/selling at least five t-shirts, TSA will put your organization's logo on the t-shirts. Each t-shirt costs $10.

The Future of the Social Welfare State: The U.S & Europe

How can the future of the social welfare state be addressed in the next decade under the current financial crisis? What alterations can be made to make the state viable? Should social benefits be reduced and to what extent? Does immigration pose an economic threat to growth or an advantage?


The survival of the social welfare state as we know it in both the U.S and abroad is a question of how democracy will continue to operate in severe economic times and simultaneously provide benefits to its citizens.  This controversial issue will be addressed in three dynamic panels that feature prominent scholars from the California Institute of Technology, University of Texas, University of Pittsburgh, Emory, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and UGA.

5. Global China Connection (UGA chapter) is now recruiting


"Dear friends,


We are very glad to announce that the chapter of the Global China Connection (GCC) in the University of Georgia is scheduled to be registered and founded in Spring 2012. GCC is a student-run 501(c)3 organization that creates opportunities for students from all over the world and their Chinese counterparts to socialize, learn and work together. GCC promotes building a connection between China and the world that extends from college campuses to professional world. GCC also provides numerous opportunities for its members to share experience, network and connect with the most promising political, business and student leaders through the various events across the globe every year.


The application for new chapter formation at UGA has been approved by the GCC Management. The preparatory team is now working on the initialization of the new chapter, and we are recruiting members into our executive board. Currently we have the following positions open: External Relations Director, Internal Communications Director, Event Coordinator, Treasurer, Secretary and IT.

“Crossing Boundaries” is an interdisciplinary research conference organized by the Graduate Student Association at UGA.  The goal of this conference is to give researchers from a wide array of backgrounds a forum for displaying their research on campus at UGA.  “Crossing Boundaries” will provide a great opportunity for presenters and attendees alike: whether you would like an opportunity to practice your presentation skills or are just looking to hear some new interesting ideas, “Crossing Boundaries” should have something valuable to offer for you!

8. National Council for Black Studies : Essay Contest


Every year, the National Council for Black Studies (NCBS) hosts a nationwide student essay contest. Graduate and undergraduate students participate in this event. The winners are recognized and honored at the annual Student Luncheon, which is held during the NCBS conference. Essay winners receive a monetary award. Essay entries are due by Friday January 20, 2012.

9. Georgia International Leadership Conference - Free Opportunity for UGA Students!

Get Excited! It is registration time for the Georgia International Leadership Conference (GILC). GILC is an awesome opportunity for UGA students to meet with international and U.S. students who are leaders on other Georgia campuses for international and multinational populations.


Please read below carefully for important information / full details

What:  The Georgia International Leadership Conference (GILC) is designed for international students and U.S. students working with international/multinational organizations. All participants must be currently enrolled at Georgia colleges and universities. The conference aims to leverage these students' international experiences to promote leadership, cross-cultural communication, and build social networks.  Students will participate in cultural simulation games, be exposed to principles of leadership, and have a better understanding of their leadership styles. 

Who:  UGA students that will be enrolled in classes at UGA during spring 2012 are eligible to attend GILC 2012. 

When:  This year's conference will be held from February 24th-26th, 2012 in Eatonton, Georgia at the Rock Eagle 4-H Center.  We will discuss specific arrival/departure times in the spring semester.


Cost: International Student Life will be able to cover the cost of all participants in GILC. However, in order to reserve your spot on the roster you must submit a $70 deposit  by cash or a check made payable to: The University of Georgia / International Student Life. Students who submit this deposit in person at the ISL Office, 210 Memorial Hall, will be given a link to complete their application online. Students must complete the online application after submitting the deposit and receiving the link. Students who attend the conference will be given their deposit back in the form they presented it to the office at the conclusion of the trip. Students who submit a deposit but fail to attend the conference will not have their deposit returned to them. Be sure to consult your schedules and speak to any professors in advance of making the deposit in order to ensure that you do not have any conflicts with the trip.

Transportation:  ISL will provide UGA vans to help transport students to Rock Eagle and back to Athens.  (There is no additional charge for this service.) Please note that if you travel separately from the ISL UGA vans, you will not be given any additional money for traveling expenses.

Presentations: If you are interested in presenting on a topic of your interest at the conference, please contact Ashley Wichman or Chase Harvey. Presentation proposals are due December 9th.
