--6. BOREN AWARDS INFO SESSION, SEPTEMBER 13 (THURS)

Thursday, September 13, 6:00 – 7:30 pm, Miller Learning Center – Room 248

Boren  Awards provide funding for U.S. citizen undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. students to study languages, geographic areas (Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East), and disciplines critical to U.S. national security (broadly defined) and underrepresented in study abroad.

Undergraduate scholarships are for 6 to 12 months abroad, and graduate fellowships are for 3 to 24 months in the U.S. and abroad. There is a minimum one-year government service requirement for Boren recipients after graduation.

This award is an excellent “in” for careers in the federal government that require skills in critical languages. UGA’s recent Boren Scholarship recipient to Brazil will be in attendance to share her experience and answer questions. Information on the Critical Language Scholarship will be presented in this session, as well.

For current study abroad students:
--8. REMINDER:  FALL 2012 PROGRAM UGA STUDY ABROAD CREDIT APPROVAL FORMS DUE FOR EXTERNAL/NON-UGA & EXCHANGES

This is a reminder for students attending a non-UGA/external study abroad program or a UGA exchange program (transcript issued by another U.S. or foreign university) to complete the Credit Approval Form and submit the CAF fee before you depart for your study abroad program.

The form serves to let UGA know you will be studying abroad, and to pre-approve your transfer credit, plus to help maintain your eligibility to keep your HOPE and financial aid.
(Students attending UGA sponsored programs (registering in OASIS) will receive resident credit instead and do not need to complete this form.)

The Credit Approval Form will require you to go to the Undergraduate Admissions Office and then to your academic advisor. When it is complete, it should be returned to the Office of International Education, 1324 S. Lumpkin Street, International Education Building, at least 3 weeks prior to departure. Please note that the Study Abroad Transfer Credit Approval Form (CAF) helps maintain your student status at UGA while abroad, as well as your eligibility for financial aid, including the HOPE or Zell Miller scholarships.  The CAF serves as the official UGA approval for your study abroad program and to receive transfer credit.

-FOR MORE INFO:  Call the OIE at 542-2900 with questions and/or to make an appointment with a study abroad advisor!  Stop by the OIE or contact us to get started on your Study Abroad Credit Approval Form (CAF) – CAFs are available at the OIE Reception Desk and online at:  http://international.uga.edu/all_forms_and_documents//

The Office of International Education strongly recommends that all current study abroad students register with the local US Embassy in your host country.

Travel Registration, now called The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service provided by the U.S. Government to U.S. citizens who are traveling to, or living in, a foreign country. STEP allows you to enter information about your upcoming trip abroad so that the Department of State can better assist you in an emergency. STEP also allows Americans residing abroad to get routine information from the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Please do take the responsibility to register your stay abroad with the US State Department while on your study abroad program.

--11.  BE A STUDY ABROAD PEER ADVISOR!

Do you still want to talk about your study abroad experience? Need an interested audience for your study abroad stories and memories? Would you like to encourage other UGA students to study abroad?

The Office of International Education is looking for peer advisors for the 2012-2013 academic year. We have found that returned students are one of the best resources for encouraging more UGA students to study abroad. Peer advisors assist the study abroad staff by giving presentations about study abroad, leading discussions and serving on student panels.
