ISL Student Organization Weekly Spotlight

Amnesty International UGA

Mission:

Our mission is to create and support platforms for individuals/groups to have collective awareness, education, and activism at UGA on behalf of human rights and social justice issues occurring locally and internationally.

What We Do:

  • Alta Gracia Campaign: We are demanding that the UGA bookstore source 1/3 of its collegiate apparel from Alta Gracia, a fair labor brand. Alta Gracia pays its workers a living wage, the workers have a democratic voice on the job, there is no forced overtime, and more. In many sweatshops around the world, workers are not paid enough to feed their family, they are physically and emotionally abused on the job. We are asking President Morehead for a meeting to discuss increasing the stock of Alta Gracia apparel at the UGA bookstore. We have spoken with the President’s assistant and the bookstore manager so far, but we are looking to talk to the President directly. We drop off letters at President Morehead’s office every week. We have gathered a coalition of 37 student organizations on campus that support our demands, called the Coalition of Bulldogs for Fair Labor.
  • Social Justice: At our meetings we discuss global social justice issues and current events. We welcome new topics and new ideas. Information sharing is a powerful piece in working toward a socially just world.

How can you get involved?
Getting involved with Amnesty at UGA is simple. We have meetings every other Wednesday in the MLC room 269 at 6:30PM. There is one tonight October 29th and again in 2 weeks on November 5th. Everyone is welcome. If you are interested in the Alta Gracia campaign please send an email or Facebook message for more information.
