The CTAERN Horticulture workshop CTAERN4229
is now live and open for registration. The workshop will be a one day
workshop on Tuesday, May 5th at the University of Georgia Griffin
Campus in Griffin, GA. Workshop will be conducted by horticulture
specialist Dr. Bodie Pennisi. An agenda for the workshop is below so you
may review the topics that we will cover that day. Teachers will be required to bring their own container and soil for this workshop.

The workshop is designed to provide a basic background and skills in production of greenhouse container crops. The workshop features a combination of lectures presented in a classroom setting and a demonstration-based, hands-on training using live plant material. The session is conducted by Dr. Bodie Pennisi, Professor in the Horticulture Department of the University of Georgia. Material covered: scientific background of plant production in greenhouse, scheduling of spring and fall crops, including popular plants such as pansies, poinsettias, bulbs, ferns, spring flowering and foliage crops best suited for containers, vegetables, and mixed combos. Topics will also include nutritional management, plant growth regulators, disease and pest management, and profitability.

8:20 - 9:45 “Managing Media, Nutrition, and PGRs” – This presentation will discuss important aspects of managing plant growth in a greenhouse environment – soilless media, nutrition, and plant growth regulators.
9:45 - 10:30 “Selected Crops” – This talk will focus on popular crops – spring & warm season annuals, bulbs, ferns, pansies, poinsettias.
10:40 – 11:30 “Crop Scheduling & Profitability” – This presentation will discuss scheduling of container crops.
11:30 – 12:00 “Mixed Combos” – discussion of basic aesthetic rules for combining plants in combo containers.
12:00 – 12:30 “Vegetable Containers” – discussion of growing vegetables in containers.
12:30 - 1:15 pm Lunch
1:15 - 2:30 pm “Ideas for Vegetable, Ornamental, and Other Specialty Mixed Containers”
2:30 - 4:00 “Make Your Own Container” – attendees will make a mixed container using soilless media and an assortment of plant materials4:00 – 5:00 “Resources and Q and A”
