Middle East Student Symposium Call for Papers (top)
The Middle East Council announces a Call for Papers for the Seventh Annual Middle East Student Symposium.  This symposium aims to bring together young scholars from across the University System of Georgia and from other states and institutions for a day of intellectual and creative exchange centered around issues pertaining to the Middle East, including North Africa and Central Asia.  

Research papers and creative projects such as posters and artwork relating to the Middle East, North Africa or Central Asia from a historical or contemporary perspective, are welcome. Interested participants should submit a proposal as an MS Word attachment electronically to Dr. Jason Tatlock at [log in to unmask]  with the following subject line: Student Symposium <Your Name>.   Deadline for submissions is March 2, 2015.

All submissions should also include the following:
1.         Name of presenter and faculty sponsor/supervisor
2.         E-mail address of faculty sponsor/supervisor
3.         College/University affiliation of the presenter
4.         Title of the presentation and a 200 word abstract of the research paper or creative project.

The Registration fee for students is $15 and $20 for faculty and other non-students.  Please send checks in advance and written out to Armstrong State University.  You may mail the checks to Jason Tatlock, Associate Professor of History, Department of History, Armstrong State University, 11935 Abercorn Street, Savannah, GA 31419.

***In the event that students and faculty must cancel registration, please be advised that a refund will be issued if the notification of cancellation is received prior to March 2, 2015.

    2015 Spring Advising: Walk-in Hours and Weekly Options Abroad Sessions (top)
    We offer walk-in advising and “Options Abroad” sessions for students interested in study abroad. For individual attention, we recommend visiting a peer advisor during walk-in hours for quick questions. For a general overview of study abroad, we recommend attending one of our weekly Options Abroad sessions.

    Webinar about Admission to the School for Field Studies Admission (top)
    On Thursday, January 29,  The School for Field Studies (SFS) will host a free, interactive webinar about SFS admissions. The webinar, led by SFS’s admissions team, will cover each step of the SFS process -- from application to students arriving in the field. The goal for this webinar is to provide you with an in-depth look at the application, admissions, and program preparation processes for SFS students.

    The webinar will cover the following topics:
    * What we look for when evaluating students for SFS programs
    * A step-by-step explanation of the application process
    * Logistics of student travel and visas

    DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship for Study Abroad in Germany (top)
    The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) invites highly qualified undergraduate students to apply for scholarships funding study, senior thesis research and/or internships in Germany. The goal of this program is to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities. Preference will be given to students whose projects or programs are based at and organized by a German university. Scholarships are available either as part of an organized study abroad program or as part of an individual, student-designed study abroad semester or year.

    The deadline for applications is January 31, 2015 (postmark date).

    Study Abroad in Stellenbosch, South Africa (top)
    The UGA Center for the Study of Global Issues (Globis) is accepting applications for the 2015 study-abroad program in Stellenbosch, South Africa.  This Maymester program, which is run by faculty in the International Affairs and Sociology departments, provides a unique opportunity to combine classroom and service learning in Stellenbosch (a college town just outside Cape Town) with a wide range of extracurricular activities, including a five-day safari trip to Zimbabwe and Botswana.  Students will receive six hours of International Affairs or Sociology credit.  Application will be accepted until February 1, 2015.  For more information, visit the website  or contact either of the program's co-directors, Dr. Markus Crepaz ([log in to unmask]) or Dr. William Finlay ([log in to unmask]).

    Fall 2015 UGA Exchange Program Application Due on February 3 (top)
    For those of you considering a UGA Exchange Program for Fall 2015 or during the next academic year, now is the perfect time to learn about and plan for an upcoming exchange! Fall 2015 placements may be available for UGA partner institutions in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, France, Ghana, Germany, Japan, Korea, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom & Uruguay - several are new partner universities.

    • Academic Areas: While on exchange, students take regular university courses offered by the host institution; Programs offer a variety of subjects suitable for a wide range of majors, minors, elective and core areas of study.  In addition, many programs will offer language and culture study as part of the curriculum.
    • Costs & Financial Aid: Exchange Program Fee: $5,418 *Spring 2015, which is equivalent to UGA in-state tuition/fees (payable to UGA); Additional expenses include airfare, meals & accommodation expenses at host university, international travelers insurance and other personal expenses.  HOPE, Zell Miller and other UGA Financial Aid may be used on all UGA exchange programs.  Additional scholarships available here.

    US-UK Fulbright Internship in London - Summer 2015 (top)
    The US-UK Fulbright Commission in London is seeking applicants for the internship programme for summer 2015. Internships are a great fit for UK students who have had study experience in the US, American study abroad students seeking to maximize their time in London, or for recent graduates able to come to the UK on BUNAC's Intern in Britain programme. Please note applicants must demonstrate the legal right to work in the UK, most commonly via a Tier 4 Student Visa or Tier 5 for BUNAC.  For more information, see the website.

    In previous years, interns have come from international relations, marketing, communications, political science, international/higher education, student affairs, education or non-profit backgrounds.  However, applicants from all fields are welcome. 

    Internships are unpaid and may be offered full-time or on a part-time basis around students’ class schedules. Internships may vary from one to six months in length.

    To apply, students may email a CV and covering letter to [log in to unmask], with the subject line “Awards Internship”, “Alumni Internship” or ”Advising Internship”. The applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis starting from 13th February.

    2015 Taiwan Study Abroad Scholarship (top)
    The Taiwan United States Alliance (TUSA) Ambassador Scholarship provides students from the United States a unique opportunity to intensively study Chinese Language (Mandarin) and immerse themselves in Taiwanese culture over a period of 2 months. TUSA Ambassadors are expected to act as goodwill advocates for both the United States and Taiwan wherever opportunities present themselves.

    UK Summer Institute Applications Are Now Open (top)
    The US-UK Fulbright Commission applications are open for the UK Summer Institute Award Programmes for US Undergraduates.  Each Programme varies in duration, from three to six weeks, and offers students a fantastic opportunity to be immersed in the study of British academics and culture. Students will take part in cultural events, research, collaboration, and presentation at an esteemed British University.

    Deadlines for 2015 are:  February 26th or March 5th, 2015 – depending on the Institute.

    2015 Global Food and Trade Study Abroad Program in China (top)
    The Global Food and Trade study abroad program is now accepting applications for Maymester 2015. On this 30 day adventure, students explore China’s rich history, culture and modern developments while gaining a new perspective on international food and trade. Students will study at Shanghai Ocean University and the Tianjin University of Science and Technology while exploring a variety of topics, including trade between China and the U.S., environmental issues in China, cultural differences, food safety systems and and product trends. Students will take field trips to the Great Wall of China, farmers’ cooperatives, and more. 6 hours of credit are available.     Gilman Summer 2015 & Fall/AY 2015-2016 Application Open (top) 
    The Gilman International Scholarship Program is pleased to announce that the Summer 2015 & Fall/AY 2015-2016 application is now available online for students to access.  Applications are due March 3, 2015 by 11:59pm (Central Time) and the certifying advisor deadline is March 10.  For an application to be complete, students will need to have their application certified by both a study abroad advisor and a financial aid advisor.  
    You are also welcome to join the Gilman Program for any applicant webinars offered. All webinars are scheduled in central time.

    Internship Opportunities in Asia (top)
    The UGA Office of International Education was recently awarded $200,000 from the Freeman Foundation to provide grants for professional experience throughout Asia. the primary objective of this grant is to fund internships! 

    Current undergraduate or graduate students and recent graduates (within one year) are eligible. The award amount for this grant is up to $5000 per student.

    Internships/Volunteer opportunities MUST last for a minimum of 4 weeks. There is no maximum limit on internship/volunteer duration. Internships/volunteer program MUST be conducted in Southeast Asia. Summer/Fall application deadline is March 6th.

    Santander Scholarships for Leeds International Summer School (top)
    There are a number of Santander Scholarships worth £500 (approx. 755USD/655€) available to students applying to Leeds International Summer School (LISS) from the following countries: Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Germany, Ghana, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Russia, Singapore, Spain, UAE, Uruguay and the USA.

    LISS is an exciting four-week programme running from 3rd July to 2nd August 2015, combining world-class tuition, with experiential field trips and a wide variety of cultural and social activities.  It offers a fantastic chance for students to experience British university life and culture, as well as earning academic credit which can be transferred back to their home university degree. As well as living and studying in the cosmopolitan, student city of Leeds participants will also have the chance to explore London where the programme will end.

    LISS is an all-inclusive programme. The programme fee of £2855 includes tuition, accommodation, social programme, ALL field trips and excursions and full gym membership. Students who are awarded the Santander Scholarship will receive a £500 discount off the programme fee. Application deadline: 1st May 2015.

    Volunteer in Rincón, Puerto Rico (top)
    Casa de Amistad has partnered with charity organizations and local schools in Puerto Rico to provide volunteer opportunities from June 15, 2015-July 20, 2015. Volunteer activities include: beach clean-ups, water testing, beach-side recycling, tree planting, animal rescue, support for the homeless and HIV positive community, youth mentoring and much more.

    The volunteer house is only a block away from the beach, with a private pool, wireless internet, washer and dryer, and other amenities. No passport is necessary to travel to Puerto Rico.
