The Valencia Program includes a 15-week spring semester as well as a 7-week summer option.  Students take four courses for the spring or two courses for the summer, choosing between language, culture, literature, and film courses.  Courses are taught on the campus of the University of Valencia by native UV faculty, and students live at the Colegio Mayor Rector Peset, an official UV residence hall located in the heart of the city’s casco antiguo.  Native Spanish as well as international students from South America, Asia, and elsewhere in Europe provide a wealth of opportunities for new friendships.  The Cathedral, the Plaza de la Virgen and the Plaza de la Reina, and the Turia river greenspace are all within a 5-minute walk from the residence hall.  The Valencia programs thus provide constant opportunities for the program's participants to immerse themselves in Spanish academic and social life.

Boren Awards

Boren Awards provide up to $30,000 funding for U.S. citizen undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. students to study languages, geographic areas (Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East), and disciplines critical to U.S. national security (broadly defined) and underrepresented in study abroad. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.


Undergraduate scholarships are for 6 to 12 months abroad, and graduate fellowships are for 3 to 24 months in the U.S. and abroad. There is a minimum one-year government service requirement for Boren recipients after graduation. This award is an excellent “in” for careers in the federal government that require skills in critical languages.


Information about Boren’s African Languages Initiative, which provides a unique opportunity for students of African languages to receive funding for domestic and overseas study, will be presented in this session, as well. To reserve a spot in the session, sign up here.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study and intern abroad and the countries and regions where they go by offering awards to U.S. undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints.

*Don't forget! The Options Abroad Workshops on Sept. 14-15 as well as Sept. 21-22 will focus on the Gilman Scholarship!
