Okefenokee Adventures has again offered to provide a 1 hour boat tour for
$5.00 per person but seating will be limited.  Owner Joy Campbell asks that
the teachers call 1 week ahead, which would be Thurs. March 21 to schedule
their tour.  Okefenokee Adventures phone number is 912-496-7156.  When they
make the call, have them state that they are part of the Forestry Field Day
group so Joy will know to schedule the tour in the 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm time
slot.




*Option 1 (1-2 hours**) – Visitor Center Vicinity *




*Boat Tour:  *Take a 1 hour guided boat tour into the interior of the
Okefenokee.  Boats will leave at 12:00 and 1:00.  The cost will be *$5.00
per student* and seating is very limited.  *You will need to make
reservations by Thursday, March 21.*  *To make reservations, contact
Okefenokee Adventures at 912-496-7156 and tell them that you are with the
Forestry Field Day group.  *



 *Canal Diggers Trail:*  This trail starts at the corner of the picnic area.
Walk the 3/4 mile trail to view the remnants of the Suwannee Canal, dug in
the late 1800’s in hopes of draining the swamp. Once you cross the Wildlife
Drive, the trail loops through the longleaf pine forest.



 *Cane Pole Trail: * This trail leaves from the western edge of the parking
lot and extends to the observation deck overlooking Mizell Prairie, only ¼
mile away.  This trail will take you along the Suwannee Canal.



*Visitor Center:* Explore the Visitor Center, the bookstore and watch the
award winning 15-minute film on the Okefenokee Swamp.



*Archery:* An archery venue that you can walk up to and shoot. Refuge staff
will be available to provide safety information and instructions.



 *Herpetology Table:* The Orianne Society will have a table with several
different species of reptiles and amphibians that depend on the Longleaf
Pine ecosystem.  Stop by to learn some interesting facts about herpetology.



 *Fishing* *Demonstration: *At the boat basin, fisheries biologists from
GA-DNR will go over fishing equipment and give pointers with a fishing
demonstration.  Poles and bait will be available.



*Tree Climbing:*  Learn first-hand from one of Okefenokee’s wildlife
biologists how to climb a tree when working with red-cockaded woodpeckers.



*Option 2 (2 hours)** – Chesser Island Vicinity*



*Chesser Island Homestead:  *Travel by bus down the 4.5 mile Swamp Island
Drive to the Chesser Island Homestead and tour the historic home site to
learn how “Swampers” use to live. A guide will tell you about life on
Chesser Island in the early 1900s.



*Boardwalk:  *Travel by bus down the 4.5-mile Swamp Island Drive
to our ¾-mile Boardwalk that takes you from the uplands to the open marsh
areas of the Okefenokee Swamp and ends at the Owl’s Roost Observation Tower
overlooking Seagrove Lake.
