*Economic Stress Continues for Georgia's Urban Agriculture * E. M. Bauske, W. J. Florkowski, G. Landry
Last year (2007) was a difficult year for urban agriculture industry primarily as a result of drought and subsequent water restrictions (Bauske, et al. 2008). In 2008 the industry remains under duress, but the economic pressure sources negatively impacting the industry have diversified. High gasoline prices, the contraction of the housing market, rising unemployment and the heightened probability of a recession have combined with the continuing drought and lasting water restrictions to create a challenging business environment.

A 'cow tax' from EPA? Bovine emissions could be costly for farmers
By Bob Johnson
Associated Press
Saturday, December 06, 2008
Montgomery —- For farmers, this stinks: Belching and gaseous cows and hogs could start costing them money if the federal government decides to charge fees for air-polluting animals.
Farmers so far are turning their noses up at the notion, which they contend is a possible consequence of an Environmental Protection Agency report after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2007 that greenhouse gases emitted by belching and flatulence amounts to air pollution.

*It is with a great deal of pleasure that I announce the committee's selection for the Tenth Induction Ceremony of the Agricultural Education Hall of Fame. This year we had many great applicants but due to the policy adopted years ago we could only select one active person and four retired educators. This year the recipients are Mr. John Wilkinson, Mr. Charles Anderson, Mr. Bruce Baker, Mr. Robert Houser and Mr. Gilbert Underwood. I think you will agree that all are deserving individuals and have contributed much to the quality of the Agricultural Education Program in Georgia.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving Break. Last week's episode of America's Heartland was especially nice, as it deals with life on an aircraft carrier - the USS Ronald Reagan, feeding the sailors, and sailors who grew up on farms and are serving the country. Caution with the use of Exo-Therm fungicide to treat botrytis - if the poinsettia bracts have already changed in color don't use! It can cause your plants to turn black depending on the concentrate.
Best practice - after your bracts color is to keep plants dry, water only when necessary and hand water to avoid wet bracts and leaves.
The CTAE Resource Network has posted the Agriculture Teachers (GVATA) mid-winter conference for anyone interested in receiving a recommendation for 1 plu upon completion of the conference. If you are planning to attend the entire conference and would like to get this 1 plu, you should now be able to sign up at www.ctaern.org -- you will be able to sign up between now and January 15, 2009.
Poinsettia bracts should have some color by now and in full bloom by early December and ready to sale. Now is the time to solve any last minute problems with your plants. If we get any more cloudy weather or your plants are staying too wet this creates the perfect environment for botrytis on poinsettias with color. Exo-Therm Termil is a smoke applied fungicide that is normally used in commercial greenhouses to keep poinsettia bracts free of botrytis. It should be applied every week until plants are out the door.

Many of you already know about the veterinary technology program at Athens Technical College. What you may not know is that we recently changed our admissions policy and procedures. The biggest change is that we now have as a pre-requisites three courses: college algebra, chemistry and biology.
I have attached documents for your files that you can provide for students who are interested in our program.

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to every teacher and state staff member who participated in the preparation for and the actual National Convention last week in Indianapolis. As evidenced by the news release, Georgia had a terrific week. This would not have been possible without your efforts which many times go unnoticed and unrecognized.
Last week the Georgia FFA Association had a big week in Indianapolis. Thank you to those who attended and represented our state so very well. It was a thrill to be associated with so much success. You each deserve a tremendous amount of credit for the hard work you put in. Please see the attached press release that highlights Georgia's success at the National FFA Convention. Please feel free to share this with those in your school and community who need to see it.

Teachers- Attached is information about a Pfizer program that supports local FFA chapters. Veterinarians or others who have Pfizer Animal Health accounts can designate a local FFA chapter to receive 3% of their purchase total between August 1 and November 30, 2008.
If you have any questions about the program, please let me know.
Best time to teach about a topic is when you can actually witness its happening. Here in North Georgia we are witnessing drought stressed turfgrass infected now with disease problems. Large patch disease of turfgrass is most common in the fall and in the spring as warm season grasses are entering or leaving dormancy. Large patch is caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia solani. I have recently seen it in zoysia grass and centipede lawns. South Georgia be on the look out for it in your St. Augustinegrass.
Because of the large number of schools that responded that they would like to attend the wildlife workshop on September 30, 2008, we are going to have to limit the number each school can bring to 1 senior team and 1 junior team. They need to know the exact number that will be attending in order to properly plan for this event. If you are still planning on attending this workshop, please respond to this email by Wednesday, September 17, with your exact number of participants. Thanks.

The following is from Gail Lutowski concerning the Wildlife Workshop. Please note the ***Note*** on this concerning bring jawbones and antlers with you. This would be a good time to get some teaching tools scored.
I am writing to touch base with you regarding the FFA Wildlife CDE Training that is to be held on Tuesday, 30 September 2008 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Swainsboro Tech.
If you are planning to have a state officer candidate this spring, please read this carefully and reply to me.
The state officer candidate interviews and the state dairy evaluation CDE are both scheduled for Saturday, April 18. That was an oversight, and not the intent of our staff. Once an event is scheduled, and a date given in writing to a mass audience, I don't like the idea of making changes. However, in an effort to be fair, I am considering changing the date of the candidate interviews. The interviews have to happen before the state FFA convention.
The steer / heifer deadline for the the State Jr. Livestock Show is *October 1st.*.. a few weeks away. All entries must be entered online before the October 1st deadline. That also means, the last day to have beef cattle ear tags shipped is *September 24th* (less than 2 weeks away). (Also - if you need the link the online entry system - contact your area teacher. We will send it to you directly in a private e-mail).

The Floral design projects in the Georgia National Fair are awarded points for adherence to theme. This year's theme is "Your Family's Playground". We are going to allow each entry to use an index card and write a one or two sentence description of how the arrangement depicts the theme. You may have this card attached to your arrangements (silk/live floral exhibits) that you enter before the fair begins. I will have index cards available for contestants in the FFA Floral Design Contest on Saturday. They may already have their description and complete the card prior to start of the

Message from Mrs. Arledge @ Georgia National Fair:
"The only competitions for which we will forgive the listing of students' names are the ID contests on Saturday, October 4. But we MUST HAVE a separate entry form for each of those contests with the TOTAL NUMBER of students participating. We will then create a listing manually to give to the gate keepers. All other contests in FFA must have each student registered by name. We will allow advisors to use one entry form (per contest) to list all the students for that contest (instead of requiring each student to have
