I am sad to report to you that Patricia Crider passed away last night,
December 26. Most of you know that Patricia and her husband Rick work with
David Turner to manage the AgEd website, report system, etc., and most of
you have met them through some of our training sessions.

Patricia got sick with Bronchitis on Dec 8 and it developed into Pneumonia.
Otherwise, Patricia was a healthy woman and full of life. We will miss

*Economic Stress Continues for Georgia's Urban Agriculture *
E. M. Bauske, W. J. Florkowski, G. Landry

Last year (2007) was a difficult year for urban agriculture industry
primarily as a result of drought and subsequent water restrictions (Bauske,
et al. 2008). In 2008 the industry remains under duress, but the economic
pressure sources negatively impacting the industry have diversified. High
gasoline prices, the contraction of the housing market, rising unemployment
and the heightened probability of a recession have combined with the
continuing drought and lasting water restrictions to create a challenging
business environment.

Fall and winter are excellent times to plant deciduous trees and shrubs.
Spring planting fever is always best if you catch it in the fall, said Gary

A 'cow tax' from EPA?
Bovine emissions could be costly for farmers

By Bob Johnson

Associated Press

Saturday, December 06, 2008

Montgomery —- For farmers, this stinks: Belching and gaseous cows and
hogs could start costing them money if the federal government decides
to charge fees for air-polluting animals.

Farmers so far are turning their noses up at the notion, which they
contend is a possible consequence of an Environmental Protection
Agency report after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2007 that
greenhouse gases emitted by belching and flatulence amounts to air
pollution.

Caution with the use of Exo-Therm fungicide to treat botrytis - if the
poinsettia bracts have already changed in color don't use!
It can cause your plants to turn black depending on the concentrate.

Best practice - after your bracts color is to keep plants dry, water
only when necessary and hand water to avoid wet bracts and leaves.

Poinsettia bracts should have some color by now and in full bloom by
early December and ready to sale.
Now is the time to solve any last minute problems with your plants.
If we get any more cloudy weather or your plants are staying too wet
this creates the perfect environment for botrytis on poinsettias with
color.
Exo-Therm Termil is a smoke applied fungicide that is normally used in
commercial greenhouses to keep poinsettia bracts free of botrytis. It
should be applied every week until plants are out the door.

The Georgia National Fair has asked us to come up with a Slogan for the
Forestry mini-booths for next year. The 3 Area Forestry Teachers in the
past have come up with this, but I thought that there are many of you out
there that put exhibits in the fair and could do a lot better job of this
than us. If you have a suggestion for this, please email it back to me by

The Georgia Junior swine boosters will be sponsoring a Georgia bred program
for the State Market hog Show in February 2009. If you are buying pigs for
the State Show from a Georgia Breeder you can also enter them in this
program. Rules and entry forms can be downloaded from www.gjsb.org . The
breeder of the pig must sign the entry form so you might want to take a copy
of the entry form with you when you go to select your animals.

We have 1 advisor and two students who can no longer go to the National
convention, if anyone wants them, we'll take your best offer. We paid full
price (I think $50) for them since we did not go through FFA to book our
rooms.

Also we have two additional tickets for the Agriscience luncheon on Friday
for $20 that we need to get rid of. The food is good and it's a nice event
for the students participating.

I am attaching a pdf file from the American Simmental Association. This was
originally published in 1986 and is hard to get a copy these days, but there
is great information in this publication that should help in teaching Animal

Thanks to the American Simmental Association for scanning it & posting it on

Teachers - with the National FFA Convention coming up, it will be very easy
to run out of time to work with your students on completing their GHP
nomination form. If your local GHP coordinator for your school or system
has not contacted you or given you an application by now - then please
contact them and find out when your local applications are due and ask for a
copy of the nomination form. Most system set the deadline sometime this
month since all the applications are due to the state GHP office next
month.

Teachers,

The Morgan County FFA Invitational Horse Show will be held on Saturday, November 15th, 2008 at the Morgan County Ag Center in Madison.

Like last year, a portion of the proceeds will go to support the Department of Agriculture's Equine Impound Program, which rescues abused and neglected horses, cares for them, and helps place them in new homes.

Please review the attached "revised" DNA Guidelines. We have added an
additional collection site in Northwest Georgia because of multiple
conflicts on the November 14 -15, 2008 dates in North Georgia. We still
have collection sites on the four original dates, but we have also added an
collection site at the Saturday, October 25, 2008 from 9 am - 11 am in
Bartow county. Please review the guidelines for all details.

Hello,

For those of you not familiar with America's Heartland - PBS Series on Agricutlure in America - I encourage you to visit the website:

http://www.americasheartland.org/episodes/index.htm

Take a look at what they offer. Each week there is a new half-hour episode that features stories about a huge variety of agricultural topics. As a horticulture teacher - new to teaching Ag Science - I have found these videos to be an invaluable tool to use in my classroom. Each segment lasts only 4-6 minutes, and they usually generate a variety of student comments and discussion.

Best time to teach about a topic is when you can actually witness its
happening.
Here in North Georgia we are witnessing drought stressed turfgrass infected
now with disease problems. Large patch disease of turfgrass is most common
in the fall and in the spring as warm season grasses are entering or leaving
dormancy. Large patch is caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia solani. I have
recently seen it in zoysia grass and centipede lawns. South Georgia be on
the look out for it in your St. Augustinegrass.

The state officer candidate interviews and the state dairy evaluation CDE

the intent of our staff. Once an event is scheduled, and a date given in
writing to a mass audience, I don't like the idea of making changes.
However, in an effort to be fair, I am considering changing the date of the
candidate interviews. The interviews have to happen before the state FFA

Teachers,

You may remember that at the 2007 Summer Teacher's Conference, Chaney Mosley
presented a workshop on Substitute Lesson Plans. Before he could submit his
information to us for posting on the web site, he was called back up to
active duty. He has now returned and has submitted the information to me.
You can find his Substitute Lesson Plans under the New section of our web
site.

We currently have 15 teams registered. We are opening up the registration
deadline to the day of the contest. You can bring extra team members or add
more teams at the contest. However, it will still be helpful if you know
ahead of time to let me know, so we can plan accordingly for space. Please
reply to this e-mail if you haven't registered yet, but plan to bring a team
or extra students.

*Dear Teachers,

If you use Internet Explorer as your browser you are all clear and the
Monthly Reports should work as they have been working. If you use the
Firefox or Opera browsers, the Monthly Reports will work, but both will let
you submit records which contain errors.

We recommend that if you do not use Internet Explorer that you temporarily
use it when doing your Monthly Reports. If you do not have Internet
Explorer, you can download it for free from Microsoft. We are evaluating the
changes to the Firefox and Opera browsers to determine what we need to

Message from Mrs. Arledge @ Georgia National Fair:

"The only competitions for which we will forgive the listing of students'
names are the ID contests on Saturday, October 4. But we MUST HAVE a
separate entry form for each of those contests with the TOTAL NUMBER of
students participating. We will then create a listing manually to give to
the gate keepers. All other contests in FFA must have each student
registered by name. We will allow advisors to use one entry form (per
contest) to list all the students for that contest (instead of requiring
each student to have

soil losses, compaction, erosion, as well as a few practices that seem to
hold promise for soil restoration - including Terra Preta Nova - the
