The Department of Ecology and the Department of Economy at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences announce two PhD-candidate positions: in agricultural ecology and economy placed in Uppsala, Sweden.
The students will together investigate how ecological and economic efficiencies change across farms implementing agroecological practices such as diverse crop rotations, cover crops, reduced tillage and reduced nitrogen and pesticide use. The project provides the opportunity to work with actors in the entire food value chain from farmer to consumer, including process industry and retail in the effort to extract added value from sustainable farming and assess capacity for upscaling.

Dear DSSAT researchers,
we are offering a PhD position at Uni Bern/Agroscope Zurich with the aim to quantify potential benefits of measures to increase agricultural water use efficiency (e.g. deeper rooting crops and cultivars, mulching, soil organic amendments) both for alleviating drought-related yield losses as well as for mitigating hydrological extremes (low flows and peak flows). To address this aim, the PhD candidate will work with climate projection data as input to both a field-scale soil-water-atmosphere-plant model and a catchment-scale hydrological model, while elaborating possibilities for model integration. Based on findings from this project, particular measures may be identified to

The Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture, Australia, invites applicants for a PhD project and scholarship that will examine, amongst other things, economic, environmental and social benefits of intensive silvopastoral systems.

About project
Intensive silvopastoral systems (ISS) typically farm livestock, often cattle, using intensively programmed rotational systems. In subtropical regions, silvopastoral systems may be conducted using a leguminous understory (e.g. leucaena) as a fodder crop. These systems are land-use efficient, producing livestock, livestock feed, trees, timber and ecosystems services in the same landscape, while also conducive to high animal welfare. Evidence suggests that ISS have considerable production benefits and greenhouse gas emissions

*Position Title: *PhD in Empowering Phosphorous and Smart irrigation Role
in building Climate-Smarter Agriculture in Africa

*Description:*

Climate change already affects agricultural productivity, especially of
poor smallholder farmers. On the African continent scale, only 6% of
agricultural land is currently irrigated. In the years to come, the demand
for water in African agriculture will continue to grow to support the
increase in productivity. Input’s supply is a key factor for increased
agricultural productivity; fertilizers, as one of the main agricultural
inputs, plays important role in tackling climate change in addition to
improving the farming value chain.
