UGA BREAKS RECORD FOR ENROLLMENT, FROSH SAT
SCORES: Two of the longest-standing admissions and academic
ceilings in UGA history were exceeded this fall as enrollment broke

SENIOR JUDGE HORACE WARD RECALLS DESEGREGATION
BATTLE: Judge Ward, who 50 years ago sought admission to UGA's
School of Law, will talk about the events leading to the desegregation of

FEDERAL GRANT WILL FUND UGA PROJECT DESIGNED TO "REINVENT" TEACHER EDUCATION:
The University of Georgia is one of eight institutions around the
nation awarded grants from the U.S. Department of Education to better
train teachers for the challenges of today's classrooms. UGA's
Michael Padilla, will lead the Georgia Systemic Teacher Education
Program (GSTEP) funded by the five-year, $6.49 million grant.

UGA ECONOMIST RELEASES ANNUAL MINORITY BUYING POWER STUDY:
Minority buying power has nearly doubled over the past decade,
according to a recent University of Georgia report. Jeff Humphreys,
director of the Selig Center for Economic Growth in the Terry College
of Business, led the study which examined the purchasing power of
African Americans, Asian Americans, Latino Americans and Native
Americans nationwide.

U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT RANKS UGA AMONG THE NATION'S TOP 20 PUBLIC SCHOOLS:
The University of Georgia moved into the top 20 in U.S. News and
World Report's annual listing of the nation's best public colleges
and universities. Tied with Purdue University, the University of
Iowa and Ohio State University at number 20, UGA moved up two spots
from last year's ranking in the magazine's 2001 edition of the
"America's Best Colleges" guidebook, released Sept. 1.

Tonight, Friday, August 4, University of Georgia food safety expert
Mike Doyle is scheduled to appear on the NBC Nightly News with Tom
Brokaw. Doyle is director of the Center for Food Safety and Quality
Enhancement at the University of Georgia. The center was recently
identified as "one of the country's top food-testing laboratories,"
according to one publication.

SPECIAL BULLETIN:

NBC Today Show Scheduled to Feature Nixon Tapes Donated to UGA:

On Wednesday, July 12, NBC's Today Show is tentatively scheduled to
interview Frank Gannon, special assistant to former U.S. President
Richard Nixon. Gannon conducted exclusive videotape interviews with
the former president during his tenure in office. More than 33 hours
of videotape interviews were recently donated to the University of
Georgia Libraries' Media Archive. The tapes are valued at almost $1
million.

Special E-news from the University of Georgia

Nixon tapes donated to UGA Library; to be featured on national news
program -- Tune into "The CBS Evening News with Dan Rather" tonight
(Friday, July 7) at 6:30 p.m. where the University of Georgia's
Library will be featured. Former President Richard Nixon's assistant
Frank Gannon recently donated more than 33 hours of unedited
interviews with Nixon to UGA's special collections. The tapes have
been valued at close to $1 million. NBC's Today Show is also
tentatively scheduled to run a feature on the tapes being donated to
the UGA Library archives sometime

The latest report on gender equity in athletics prepared by the

FRATERNITY SUSPENDED:
The University of Georgia has placed Alpha Tau Omega fraternity on
interim suspension pending further investigation into circumstances
surrounding the death of fraternity member Ben Grantham. Grantham
died March 30 as the result of injuries in a car wreck in Oconee
County. Law enforcement officials are investigating the death as a
possible case of hazing.

GRADUATE SCHOOL PROGRAMS RANKED: UGA's College of Education, School
of Law and the MBA program in the Terry College of Business all rank
among the best graduate programs in the nation, according to the
latest edition of a guidebook published by U.S. News and World
Report. The College of Education is ranked 26th of 187 graduate
programs nationwide, with five of its education specialties listed
among the top 10 in the nation. The School of Law is ranked 29th of
174 law schools, and the Terry College MBA program is ranked 48th of
325 graduate business programs.

Peabody Award winners announced March 30

The winners of the 59th annual George Foster Peabody Awards will be
announced live on Thursday, March 30, from New York City beginning at
10 a.m. The Peabody Awards, administered by the University of
Georgia, are considered the most prestigious prize in the broadcast
and cable industry.

The live press conference, which will take place at the Freedom Forum
in New York, will be hosted by Peabody Awards director Barry Sherman
and NBC Today Show host Matt Lauer, and can be accessed live over

PEABODY BOARD MEETS AT UGA: The national advisory board of the George
Foster Peabody Awards arrived on campus March 25 to begin
deliberations to choose the recipients of the 59th annual Peabody
Awards, which will be announced March 30.

FORMER U.S. POET LAUREATE ON CAMPUS: Rita Dove, who in 1993 at age 41

UGA PRESIDENT INSTALLED AS CHAIR OF NATIONAL EDUCATION POLICY GROUP:
Michael F. Adams, president of the University of Georgia, was
installed as chair of the board of directors of the American Council
on Education (ACE) at the organization's 82nd annual meeting in
Chicago, Ill., on March 20. ACE is a comprehensive association of the
nation's colleges and universities dedicated to analysis of higher
education issues and advocacy on behalf of quality higher education
and adult education programs.

RUSSELL FOUNDATION PLEDGES $3 MILLION TO UGA LIBRARIES: The Richard
B. Russell Foundation has pledged $3 million to the UGA Libraries for
a planned building to house special collections and has agreed to

UGA DEAN NAMED "LEADER OF THE YEAR" BY NATIONAL AG PUBLICATION:
Gale Buchanan, dean of the University of Georgia College of
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, has been named a 1999 Leader
of the Year by Progressive Farmer magazine. Progressive Farmer
editors first began naming Leaders of the Year in 1943. The awards
are based on the leader's positive impact on agriculture and work in
the person's own state.

FOUNDATION FELLOWS FINALISTS VISIT CAMPUS:
Sixty prospective freshmen competing for UGA's most prestigious
scholarship award for undergraduates came to campus for the last leg
of the selection process Feb. 25 and 26. The students -- from Georgia
and nine other states -- have an average SAT of 1513 and high school
GPA of 4.07 (on a 4.0 scale).

JUDGE ISSUES RULINGS IN LAWSUIT: Federal District Court Judge B.
Avant Edenfield issued several rulings Feb. 10 in connection with a
lawsuit challenging the university's admissions policies. Edenfield
ruled that the case is no longer certified as a class action, denied
the plaintiffs' motion for an injunction that would have halted the
current admissions process, and affirmed a previous ruling that the
plaintiffs cannot pursue damages from UGA President Michael F. Adams
and Chancellor Stephen Portch personally. Edenfield also denied a
motion for a change of venue.

EDUCATION DEAN NAMED TO NATIONAL BOARD: Louis Castenell Jr., dean of
UGA's College of Education, is one of 15 new members elected to the
National Board for Professional Teaching
Standards. The board operates a national voluntary system to assess
and certify teachers who meet rigorous standards.

UGA PROFESSOR TO APPEAR ON "20/20":
Food safety expert Mike Doyle, director of the Center for Food Safety
and Quality Enhancement at the University of Georgia, is scheduled to
appear on ABC's news magazine program "20/20" tonight, Friday, Feb. 4
at 10 p.m. Doyle will appear in a segment about the safety and
health benefits of organic foods.

ADAMS TO TESTIFY AT CONGRESSIONAL HEARING ON WEB-BASED EDUCATION

ATHENS, Ga. -- University of Georgia President Michael F. Adams will
testify Wednesday in Washington, D.C., at the first hearing of a
congressional committee studying how the World Wide Web can be used
to strengthen education.

The Congressional Web-based Education Commission, established by
Congress in 1998, is investigating the Web's potential for redefining
learning and improving teaching in K-12 and post-secondary
classrooms. The commission, chaired by Sen. Bob Kerrey of Nebraska,
will make recommendations to the president and congress on how to

TOPPING THE CHARTS: Former UGA track star Debbie Ferguson has been
named one of the top eight student-athletes in the country by the
National Collegiate Athletic Association. She is the third
student-athlete from UGA to make that list in the last three years.
Football player Matt Stinchcomb and swimmer Lisa Coole were
previously honored. Ferguson, a UGA Presidential Scholar, is
currently training for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.

UGA ALUMNI CLUB IN ATLANTA TO OPEN:
The new UGA Alumni Club, located in the Atlanta Financial Center in
Buckhead, will officially open Feb. 26 with a gala black-tie event.
The 10,000-square-foot facility is leased by UGA's National Alumni
Association, which will offer the facilities to alumni and to UGA
schools and colleges and other units for meetings and functions.
