There are a number of excellent references for medieval mapping by
Evelyn Edson (and others):
_Medieval Views of the Cosmos
Mapping Time and Space: How Medieval Mapmakers Viewed Their World
The World Map 1300-1492: The Persistence of Tradition and Transformation
_As to a recent online summary monograph re: portolan charts, see Tony
Campbell's online monograph: http://www.maphistory.info/portolan.html .
Other have alluded to Snyder's work, _Flattening the Earth_, although I
suspect the works of Gaspar, linked in earlier messages, are more recent
and up to date in their analysis.
