Thanks for the feedback. The site is very new and in fact you may be
the first person to have actually used it to get a job completed. I
will keep this email as a souvenir.

I just cataloged a Johnson and Ward map yesterday and had to guess
at the date. So, I tried your web site and found that I was
correct. Only wish I had known about it sooner. It is now in my
cataloging tools favorites list. Thanks so much!

I am pleased to announce the initiation of my Johnson U.S. Map
Project website at www.JohnsonMapProject.org
<http://www.JohnsonMapProject.org>
<http://www.johnsonmapproject.org/>>, a non-commercial site use of
which is offered free to the public.
Through this project, I have created a data set of the changes the U.S.
and state maps in Alvin J. Johnson's /Family Atlas/ which will allow
the user of this website to definitively date the publication of any
loose U.S. map from these atlases, which published between the years
1860-87.
I also present historical essays on the life of Johnson and his
atlases and his relationship with other 19th Century American Atlas
publishers, J.H. Colton and Augustus Mitchell.
In creating the database for the Johnson U.S. Map Project, I have
studied over 85 Johnson Family Atlases from 9 libraries, 4 private
collections, and several pre-auction exhibitions. Numerous loose
atlas maps have also been studied including a large collection at
the Library of Congress. In this study, I discovered 67 different
U.S. maps utilized in Johnson atlases. Most all of these maps have
had a number of states/variations ranging from 1 to 19, with an
average of 9. This project refers to the changes as
states/variations because in strict historical map study some of the
variations noted might not qualify as "true" map states. However,
for the purpose of dating loose maps and tracking the history of the
Johnson atlases, these variations are important keys. In all there
are 631 different states/variations of the
67 maps.
