Subject: Re[2]: NTIS and the Rebellion... (fwd)
Two articles (on the subject of internet portals) relevant to this
rebellion:
1. NATURE 08 July 1999 v.400 no.6740 pp.107-109
Steve lawrence & C. Lee Giles
"Accessibility of information on the web"
2. SCIENCE 1999 July 16; 285: 295 (in NetWatch)
Net News: Search Engines Fall Short
"No single search engine...covered more than 16% of the Web's
contents..."
Additionally, this author regrets using the "i" word to characterize the
fine Bureaucrats in the Dept. of Commerce responsible for this action
against NTIS and librarians everywhere. Surely Johnnie Sutherland would
never have allowed this profane insolence and alas now probably will never
take another vacation and leave his moderator post @ uga ever again.

The point about the potential NTIS closure is not whether the cataloging
is/has been 'worth it', but where's the cataloged material? Probably
considerably less than 1% of NTIS' collection is available anywhere but
from NTIS. I don't see the Library of Congress taking on that task.
