The cloth tapes from fabric stores are quite
satisfactory, and they are relatively cheap. Somewhat
tiresome to rewind the things, though. I have a metal,
retractible one (maybe 10 years old, purchased at some,
unknown, hardware store in the Berkeley, California area):
Stanley Powerlock #33-203 "20th anniversary edition"
3m, 10 ft. long
Gives both in. and cm.
