UGA PRESIDENT INSTALLED AS CHAIR OF NATIONAL EDUCATION POLICY GROUP:
Michael F. Adams, president of the University of Georgia, was
installed as chair of the board of directors of the American Council
on Education (ACE) at the organization's 82nd annual meeting in
Chicago, Ill., on March 20. ACE is a comprehensive association of the
nation's colleges and universities dedicated to analysis of higher
education issues and advocacy on behalf of quality higher education
and adult education programs.

U.S. SENATOR PAUL COVERDELL TO SPEAK AT SPRING SEMESTER COMMENCEMENT MAY 13:
Georgia senior U.S. Senator Paul Coverdell will speak at UGA's spring
semester commencement May 13. Coverdell, a strong advocate in the
senate for educational reform and a national leader in the fight
against drugs, will speak at the ceremony for undergraduates at 9:30
a.m. in Sanford Stadium.

SAM NUNN BANK OF AMERICA POLICY FORUM TO TAKE PLACE AT UGA:
John Hamre, U.S. deputy secretary of defense, will deliver the
keynote address at the Sam Nunn Bank of America Policy Forum, which
will focus on the importance of high-tech commerce to American
leadership and security in the 21st century. The forum will be held
March 27 at the University of Georgia.

UGA PROFESSOR, POET EDITS NEW ANTHOLOGY FEATURING YOUNG
AFRICAN-AMERICAN WRITERS:
Poet Kevin Young, UGA professor English and African-American studies
has edited a new anthology called Giant Steps, which has just been
released by HarperCollins. The book showcases the poetry and prose
of 26 writers who are 40 or under, including such noted authors as
Edwidge Danticat, Colson Whitehead and Randall Kenan.

UGA TO EMBARK ON FOUR PROJECTS TO IMPROVE, ENHANCE CAMPUS SAFETY, APPEARANCE:
Four major grounds-improvement projects at the University of Georgia
will enhance safety, beautify streets, preserve green space and
encourage pedestrian and non-vehicle traffic on campus.

UGA PLANS ALL-OUT PUSH TO COUNT EVERY STUDENT FOR 2000 CENSUS:
The University of Georgia is working with the Athens census office to
make sure every UGA student in the county gets a census form no
matter where they live--and that they turn in their completed forms.
Census officials are asking faculty and staff members to help
encourage students to participate.

UGA SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAM REPEAT; WIN BACK-TO-BACK NATIONAL TITLES:
The women's swimming and diving team won their second consecutive
national title at the NCAA Championships in Indiana this past
weekend. The Swim Dogs completed their title run by setting American
and U.S. Open records in the 400-meter freestyle relay.

ARTHUR DUNNING NAMED UGA'S VICE PRESIDENT FOR PUBLIC SERVICE AND OUTREACH:
Arthur N. Dunning, a senior official of Georgia's state university
system who has extensive international experience and has spearheaded
several leading strategic initiatives and partnerships for the
system, has been chosen to be the University of Georgia's new vice
president for public service and outreach.

Patricia Adair Gowaty, ecology professor at UGA, is quoted in a March
14 New York Times article, which examines the classical debates of
developmental psychology: determining if human nature is a function

HOST: JEOPARDY HAS TOUGH QUESTIONS
Comments made to UGA journalism students by "Jeopardy!" host Alex
Trebek during his March 17 visit to Athens are spreading quickly
across the Associated Press wire and appear in publications across
the nation.

DEMOCRATS RISE AGAIN IN THE SOUTH:
Charles Bullock, political science expert at the University of
Georgia, is quoted in an Associated Press story about the effect
Southeastern states have on presidential primaries. The story appears

University of Georgia entomologist Craig Sheppard says black soldier
flies, which consume tons of farm animal waste, provide an
economical, natural and sensible solution to the growing concerns of
excess manure on hog and poultry farms.
