Subject: MARBI topics for June ALA

What follows is a brief summary of selected proposals and discussion
papers slated to be discussed at the June meeting of ALA.  As the MAGERT
liaison to MARBI, I would appreciate any questions or comments you may
have.

99-08  Defining URL/URN Subfields in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format

This proposal would allow URNs and URLs to appear in fields other than
the 856 field in the bibliographic format.  The fields included in the
proposal are 555, 583, and 76X-78X.

99-09 concerns additions to the Holdings Format.

Discussion Paper 114 concerns possible changes to the MARC 21 formats
due to proposed changes in the definition of seriality in AACR2.  Since
the Joint Steering Committee won't be meeting until the fall of 1999, DP
114 will serve as a starting point for the MARBI discussions.

Discussion Paper 115 covers the needs of the art world to indicate the
certainty of the artist's name attributed to a work of art.  AACR2
provides for the treatment of unknown or fictitious authorship.
Currently, there isn't a way to indicate how certain the cataloger is of
the attribution of a work to an artist.  The art world has defined terms
to indicate the level of certainty and DP115 explores ways of recording
that information in the bibliographic record.

Discussion Paper 116 suggest ways of handling bound withs in the
Holdings Format.

Discussion Paper 117 covers the encoding of non-Gregorian dates in the
Bibliographic Format.  Since non-Gregorian calendars do not match with
the Gregorian calendar, retrieving materials by dates is made more
complicated by having to convert dates to the Gregorian calendar.  This
paper suggests ways of dealing with these situations.

Discussion Paper 118 continues the exploration into different ways to
handle non-filing (or non-sorting) characters.  Discussion on this topic
was held at Midwinter without resolution and DP 118 presents some
different options.
