Subject: New Guidelines for coding Leader/06 for Electronic Resources

Johnnie,
I have seen this announcement in USMARC and Autocat but do not remember
seeing it in the last two Maps-l digests. If it was not in Maps-l, could
you please post it? I think there are enough map catalogers that need/want
this info. to make it worth putting in Maps-l. Although not specifically
map-related, it does deal with Electronic Resources and there are certainly
lots of overlapping areas/concerns.
Thanks.
Ellen

>Subject: New Guidelines for coding Leader/06 for Electronic Resources
The Network Development and MARC Standards Office of the Library of
Congress has made available a new document on the coding of Leader/06
(Type of Record) in the MARC 21 Bibliographic Format. The document is
intended to assist MARC users in deciding how to code records for
electronic resources both in the Leader/06 and the 008/26 or 006/09 (Type
of computer file). Since the revision of the definition of code "m"
(Computer file) in Leader/06 to narrow its use to a computer file content
orientation, users have expressed the need for further guidance in making
the decision about coding these elements.
As a result both of the new definition and of discussion on various lists,
it was found that a document was needed giving concrete examples of actual
resources with guidance on how to code them. The list of examples in this
document is a work in progress; as users encounter other types of
electronic resources that are not included, they are encouraged to submit
them to the Network Development and MARC Standards Office to be included
on the list with appropriate coding indicated.
The document is at:
