Wowee! Hit a nerve! Thanks for all the answers on this.
I did not mean to sound judgemental, I think it is perfectly fine to keep
only topos of the primary region for a map library. I am just reacting to
the number of topos being offered say, in the last three months, for
exchange or gift to other libraries. It seems to be a clear bump on the
usual smooth curve of accessions/deaccessions.
It is good to know there are scattered collections around the country which
still have entire sets. I guess complete depos collections could
theoretically have them also, but maybe only the most recently published?
Unlike topos, we keep only the NYC region current NOS charts, including
back issues. All other regions are pulled for eventual deaccessioning or
exchange. So we do, indeed, do some weeding, deleting, exchange, under
strict guidelines. Lots of paperwork involved, so we have a huge backlog to
process. They may not make it out of the building before I retire...
