Patrick is, of course, right. I should not have made a general
statement that all sheet-feed scanners are paper shredders.
I apologize to the list.
I cannot cite any studies; I was speaking from my own personal
experience (of equipment both inside and outside the Library of
Congress).
The two things to keep in mind with sheet-feed scanners are:
a) will the scanner stop if the sheet is grabbed?
and
b) will the scanner stop if the sheet is not fed in at a straight
angle?
Many of our maps with backing have large bowing issues, where
the item is warped more than a quarter of an inch.
Ideal.com has a scanner that does the above. My (now retired)
coworker saw a black & white scanner in action; they now have
color options. (This demonstration occurred about five years
ago, before I began working at the Library.) I am told that if
the color scanner were available our Conservation staff would
have approved its purchase.

I was able to see a Kirtas demonstration of their book scanner.
It was very impressive - even with a torn page the suction released
if any tension was placed on the page.

Diane;
It is a bit distressing when you, The Library of Congress, dismisses
sheet-feed scanner out of hand.
Could you please cite a study, or relate the Library's experiences
with
sheet-feed scanners. Given the costs and the huge disparity between
the
variety of scanning solutions, quantifiable information is critical.
Thanks,

Chris,
We (Library of Congress) do not use sheet-feed scanners (aka
paper shredders). We use a large flatbed Tangent and are in
the process of installing a Jumbo Scan.
The Jumbo Scan is produced by Lumiere Technology (in France)
and the U.S. distributor we are going through is Data Management
Internationale (DMI).

We can answer questions about this new scanner in about a
month or two.
I would also like wish you luck on printing. We have had trouble
with colors and printing. Basically we encourage people to go
to the graphic/printing experts - within our agency we suggest
they go to our printing division; outside our agency we tell
patrons to the CD ROM(s) to a local print shop.
When we do print, we use vegetable not archival inks - so
they fade in about 3-5years.

Hello,
We are looking to acquire a large-format color scanner, and I wondered
if
list members might be willing to offer any advice? I have reviewed the
maps-l archives for the last few years, and I'm aware this subject has
cropped up before, but with only brief suggestions, and nothing that
recent.
Ideally we would like a sheet-feed scanner, 36 inches wide or greater,
that
can scan up to 400 dpi in color and greyscale, to standard image
formats
including TIFF. We already have a large-format colour printer (HP 500
PS),
so we would not be looking for an integrated scanner/printer option.
Many thanks in advance,
Chris
