Mary Feeney (ed.) 'Digital culture: maximising the nation's
investment. A synthesis of JISC/NPO studies on the preservation
of electronic materials' (London: National Preservation Office,
British Library, 1999) ISBN 0-7123-4645-7.

This 86-page volume represents a very clear and readable summary
of seven detailed studies on the preservation of electronic
materials (1997-9). To give a flavour of the work, the chapters
are:
1. Introduction to the issues
2. Stakeholders: rights and responsibilities
3. Encouraging and learning from best practice
4. Technological decisions
5. Estimating the costs of digital preservation
6. Rescuing digital materials
7. Completing the jigsaw: managing the digital preservation process
8. Key recommendations and follow-up activities
Although the 'nation' in the title is the UK, 'Digital Culture',
and the studies on which it is based, have a wider relevance.
