OBJECTIVES:
The sponsor supports in-residence short-term research fellowships for
pre- and postdoctoral and independent researchers, for advanced
research in history and the humanities. Sponsorship is
reserved exclusively for scholars whose work is centered on the colonial
history of the Americas, North and South, including all aspects of
the European, African, and Native American involvement.
The stipends of many of the Fellows each year are paid out of restricted
funds generously donated to the Library for this purpose:
The Jeannette D. Black Memorial Fellowship is for research in
the history of cartography or a closely related area.
The Alexander O. Vietor Memorial Fellowship and the Marie L. and William
R. Hartland Fellowship focus on research in early maritime
history.
The foregoing list is intended to suggest area! s of research on
colonial America that may benefit from the use of JCB materials.
Applicants should not however, apply for a grant in a
specific Fellowship category. All short-term applications are reveiwed
as a group without reference to these categories.
ELIGIBILITY
Eligible applicants are foreign scholars, graduate students,
and independent researchers, as well as to U.S.-based academics at any
level. Graduate students must have passed their preliminary or general
examinations at the time of the application. All fellowships
are residential, and fellows are expected to relocate and be
in continuous residence at the Library for the entire term of the award.
Those living within commuting distance (approximately forty-five miles)
are ordinarily not eligible for JCB Fellowships. Applicants
should not apply for a grant in a specific Fellowship category. All
short-term applic! ations are reviewed as a group without reference to
specific research categories.
FUNDING
Fellowships offer a stipend of $2,000 per month.
