I looked at a 1936 Dutch nautical chart index (two pages only) and it
appears the Dutch had only a few small-scale charts of Sulu-Celebes
area: charts 120, 126, & 132. I do not have these nor any older
vintage Nederlandisch charts so I have no way of telling what their
source was. However, modern NIMA charts cite hydrographic sources
from British Admiralty. Indeed, my old B.A. chart of this area goes
into highly detailed source disclosures citing the ship name,
officers, and dates (1850-53) of Admiralty surveys. The Dutch do quite
well with large-scale charting of nearshore coastal areas, but seem to
lose it in deep ocean basins relying on Admiralty charts. If you can
pin down a good Dutch nautical chart index for the era you are seeking
your questions will be answered. This is the type of thing LC G&M
should put on a web site, if they haven't done so already.

Dear All, Does anyone know whether there are any nineteenth century Dutch
charts of this area and the northern Celebes Sea. If so, I should like to
hear from them at my email address given above. With thanks, Dorothy
Prescott
