RE: square miles of towns
In the 1988 County and City Data Book, the first column in Table C-Cities
is 1985 land area in square miles and the second column is 1980 land area.

Table 21, Population and housing units 1970 to 1990: land area and density
for metropolitan area: 1990 in the 1990 Census of population and housing,
population and housing unit counts (volume for each state) has both square
miles and square kilometers. And Table 49 in the U.S. summary volume
(CPH-2-1) ranks the metropolitan areas by population, area measurement, etc.

Re: square miles of towns
Jim,
County and city data book, a supp. of the statistical abstract by the
census bureau, has all incorporated cities in sq. miles
(counties and states, too). it's probably in the '90 census
as well but i didn't look. SMSA's are probably in the state
and metropolitan data book, another companion vol. the new
statistical abstract is coming out on cd-rom with many
additional supplementry datas; this will probably be one.
they are also adding foreign data. LC

Re: square miles of towns
Statistical Abstract of the U.S. (I'm looking at the 1992) has a
table listing land area in square miles for U.S. cities with a
population of 100,000 or more. Also, the cities tables in the
County and City Data Book, 1988 ed. list land area.
Hope this helps.

square miles of towns
Jim-
There is town and township land area in square miles and kilometers plus popula
tion density in TAble 15 of the first Illinois volume that came from the Census
Bureau after the 1990 census. I don't have the title of the volume up here, ju
st the copy of table 15 and 16. 15 is first by county, then by township and the
n by town. TAble 16 is by town alphabetically through the whole state. I assum
e the volumes for the other states work the same way. I assume you were after t
he US? I'm not sure if this is on the census CD's or not, but it is in the pape
r. Arlyn.
