There are about 72,000 islands that are more than 1 hectare in size in the
Indian and Pacific oceans alone, according to the excellent reference
work, The
Tropical Islands of the Indian and Pacific Oceans (Arnberger & Arnberger,
Austrian Academy of Sciences Press, 2001).
