Two suggestions:
(1) Rabbitt, Mary C. MINERALS, LANDS, AND GEOLOGY FOR THE COMMON
DEFENCE AND GENERAL WELFARE. Volume 1, Before 1879; Volume 2, 1879 -
1904. Published by the U. S. Geological Survey, 1979.
(2) Davies, Gordon L. Herries. SHEETS OF MANY COLOURS, THE MAPPING OF
IRELAND'S ROCKS, 1750 - 1890. Published by the Royal Dublin Society,
1983. (Although specific to Ireland only, this is a good example of
presenting the history of geologic mapping.)
