Subject: Open Memorandum Concerning NGA's Federal Register Announcement
To Withdraw Aeronautical Products (Maps,
Charts and Associated Data) from Public Access
Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2005 16:35:04 -0500

------------------
East View Cartographic would like the map librarian community to be aware
of its efforts to keep important documents in the US public domain. As many
of you know, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) has proposed
withdrawing from public access many thousands of aeronautical chart products
as of October 1, 2005. This unprecedented step--basically the largest
instance of proposed cartographic censorship in US history--will
significantly affect users of associated cartographic and GIS products all
over the world. Because the products and the issues concerned are rather
complex, East View has prepared a comprehensive overview for interested
persons, as well as issued its own recommendations on the matter. This
overview and recommendations can be found at:

Any comments would be most welcome, and we look forward to seeing some of
you at the ALA MAGERT meetings this coming weekend in Boston.
Sincerely,
Kent D. Lee
