May, 2004 For Immediate Release Bringing Play Into Home Decor Didi Dunphy is the designer and director of Modern Convenience and the Recess line of art hybrid furnishings. Didi is exhibiting her works in the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, (ICFF), this year, at the Javits Convention Center May 15-18, in New York. Booth # 1526 Didi has an artist’s background, primarily sculpture, video, and other time-based arts. She received an MFA from the Art Institute in San Francisco and has exhibited her work in galleries and museums across North America. Currently she lives in Athens, Georgia and teaches at the University in the Digital Media Department. Modern Convenience furnishings stem from the concept of Recess: Bringing the free time of recess indoors and re-introducing play through sculptural elements. Didi’s hybrid forms bring the outdoors inside and are designed for people to engage in parallel play where friendships, alliances, collaborations and good ideas can happen. Modern Convenience: Recess Barnett Newman once said that sculpture is something you bump into when you are backing up to look at a painting. If you bump into the Swing or See-Saw you can hop on with out hurting your shin or leaving a scuffmark from your high heel. Didi uses vinyl that is play friendly and oversized acrylic tassels and chrome handlebars that sparkle and sway. Or take a quick spin around the dining room table on the Inside Skate, a tuck n' roll upholstered skateboard. With a background in fine arts, Didi re-invents sculpture, creating an elegant human-friendly functional form with whimsy.
