Congratulations to the Climate Data Team of NLWIS for this pending release!

I would like to take this opportunity to announce that the Atlas of Canada has just recently released a series of climate maps showing precipitation and temperature maps. If you are interested in viewing the maps, you may find them on the Atlas of Canada at: http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/maps/environment/climate

Some background information (on behalf of the Atlas of Canada) regarding this map series, has been included below:

In Canada, our climate is directly related to the diversity of our vast landscape. The Atlas of Canada has captured the nature of the Canadian climate in every edition, through maps, charts and texts defining climate as it relates to each of the climatic regions. In the 6th edition Climate was initially expressed in the context of "Climate Change" focusing on modeling climate scenarios for the future; however basic climate variables had not been presented. It is with this recent climate project that the "Precipitation" and "Temperature" maps were developed in support of the existing thematic maps on the 6th Edition of the Atlas of Canada.

The Atlas of Canada has been using climate and weather data from its inception in 1906. Climate variables are important to the study of plant/animal and climate relations, as it provides "a broad-scale driver of the distribution, abundance and productivity of plants and animals" according to the Canadian Forestry Service(CFS). "Unfortunately there is never a weather station near field research locations therefore there is a need to generate spatially reliable estimates of climate at locations often a long distance from the nearest weather station. In addition, the growing use of process models for forestry and other environmental modeling problems has created a further need for reliable regular grid models of various climatic variables." The climate data used in compiling the maps for the Atlas of Canada were supplied through the Canadian Forestry Service. The CFS uses temperature and precipitation data previously collected and provided by Environment Canada. CFS had defined spatial data models and applied them to climate "normals" for Canada and North America. The models used provide reliable estimates when data is compiled from and between weather stations.

This collection of maps builds on the experiences and content of previously released climate maps in the 5th Edition. This series also reflects and enhances the existing released data, maps, and ancillary content in the 6th edition online - namely maps showing Snow Cover, Sea Ice, Land Cover and Plant Hardiness.

For more information about the Temperature and Precipitation Maps, including the methodology applied, please read the map texts associated with the maps online (see link above).

Subject: National Daily 10km gridded Dataset for Canada (1961-2003): Available soon

The Climate Data team of the National Land and Water Information Service
(NLWIS) is close to releasing V1 of its Daily 10km Gridded Climate Dataset for Canada (1961- 2003). The dataset contains grids of daily maximum temperature (°C), daily minimum temperature (°C) and total daily precipitation (mm) at a spatial resolution of 10km for the Canadian landmass south of 60° N for the period 1961-2003. These grids, which are available in two file formats (text or GeoTIFF), were interpolated from daily Environment Canada climate station observations using a thin plate smoothing spline surface fitting method implemented by ANUsplin V4.3. The datasets (text, GeoTIFF) each fit onto two DVDs (i.e. both are <10 GB). A more detailed explanation of the dataset is provided as an attachment with this email.

In the short-term, the dataset will only be available by request from the NLWIS Climate Data Team (see attachment for contact information), although it will be made available through the NLWIS web portal sometime in the future (http://www.agr.gc.ca/nlwis-snite/). Right now we are at the stage where we are simply waiting for the French translation of the accompanying documentation and the approval to publish/distribute from our legal team.

If you are interested in acquiring this data, please send me an email detailing the request, with a general description of what you would be using the data for. We have been informed that the more people who send us requests for this dataset, the quicker we will be able to push the publication/distribution process along....

Feel free to pass this onto anybody you think who may find this dataset useful.

Thanks

Andy
