1. Max/MSP Workshop -Interactive digital audio for composition, performance & installation
Wednesday and Thursday, July 7 & 8, 5pm to 9pm at ICE

The workshop will provide an introduction to Max/MSP, and cover a selection of techniques and
methods for programming in Max/MSP. The focus will be on handling audio, managing data, and
designing for interactivity. We will also examine the new internet protocol for interactivity, called
"Open Sound Control." No previous training required.

Cost: $90
Instructor: Éric Marty

Instructions for participants:

REGISTER
To register, simply email <[log in to unmask]>
or call 706-296-9664.
Leave your name and indicate that
you will attend the workshop on July 7 & 8.

WHAT YOU NEED
1. A check for $90 made out to the instructor (Eric Marty)
2. Some food and/or coffee for yourself. (We will take a break long enough to get coffee or a
sandwich downtown.)

WHAT YOU MIGHT WANT
1. Some paper
2. A laptop
3. A copy of the software (Max/MSP)

Max/MSP can be downloaded from Cycling'74 (www.cycling74.com).
You can download "Max," "Max/MSP," or "MAX/MSP with Jitter."
We will use "Max/MSP" for the workshop.
You can run the software for free on your computer for 30 days.
After 30 days, the software will stop working unless you purchase it.
Cycling '74 has an educational discount for students and educators.

2. ICE Director Carmon Colangelo's exhibition opens in Mexico:
Carmon Colangelo
PHANTASMAGORIA
Museo del Pueblo de Guanajuato
Guanajuato, Mexico
July 1-August 15, 2004

This exhibition at the Museo del Pueblo de Guanajuato includes 30 prints,
drawings and mixed media works by Carmon Colangelo from 1999 to 2004
ranging from small to large-scale. There are also two recent collaborative prints
with Ted Saupe included in the exhibition.

“Phantasmagoria,” refers to the idea of a magic lantern, phantoms and various
optical allusions. Colangelo explores the idea of various illusions and visual
appearances that speak to the constant shifting of meaning that occurs at
different times and in different places. His images make references to the
conundrums of travel, connectivity and various notions about globalization. He
often refers to the social and political issues of the moment, such as war
terrorism and religion. However, his work seeks to achieve an emotional
connection through the visual energy and harmony of potent color, image and
line. The poetic and rhythmic qualities are essential to his work and functions
much like the music to connect to the human condition, psyche and spirit.

3. The UC Berkeley Center for New Music and Audio Technologies (CNMAT) presents:

Open Sound Control Conference 2004
Friday July 30, 9am - 5pm
Hewlett Packard Auditorium (Room #306, Soda Hall) on the UC Berkley campus
Registration fee: $35 (payable at the conference site)

-- You are invited to the Open Sound Control Conference 2004 --

Join us as we bring OSC developers and researchers together with
representatives from industry to explore the many implementations and
applications of OSC. The Open Sound Control Conference 2004 will
introduce new work on the protocol, such as recent developments in
the query system and a proposed standard for bi-directional XML
translation, as well as general OSC-related research in areas such as
clock synchronization, discovery, and spatial audio.

Topics and themes of the Conference include:
- New draft proposals for protocol standardization
- Technical discussion of multimedia projects using OSC
- Real-time communication issues
- Schemas for interpretation of control data
- Network discovery services
- Musical applications and related concerns
- Related research topics

Visit http://www.opensoundcontrol.org to register.

  -- About OSC --

Open Sound Control (OSC) is a protocol for communication among
computers, sound synthesizers, and other multimedia devices that is
optimized for modern networking technology. Bringing the benefits of
modern networking technology to the world of electronic musical
instruments, OSC's advantages include interoperability, accuracy,
flexibility, and enhanced organization and documentation.

This simple yet powerful protocol provides everything needed for
real-time control of sound and other media processing while remaining
flexible and easy to implement.

Features:
- Open-ended, dynamic, URL-style symbolic naming scheme
- Symbolic and high-resolution numeric argument data
- Pattern matching language to specify multiple recipients of a single message
- High resolution time tags
- "Bundles" of messages whose effects must occur simultaneously
- Query system to dynamically find out the capabilities of an OSC
server and get documentation

There are dozens of implementations of OSC, including real-time sound
and media processing environments, web interactivity tools, software
synthesizers, a large variety programming languages, and hardware
devices for sensor measurement. OSC has achieved wide use in fields
including computer-based new interfaces for musical expression,
wide-area and local-area networked distributed music systems,
inter-process communication, and even within a single application.
