Hello,
It is interesting to see this discussion on parameters that are so
fundamental to modeling crop performance under water deficits.
Joe Ritchie commented that most soils show a difference between LL and DUL
of 11 to 13%. The important exception would be sandy soils, and I suspect
some tropical soils with aggregates that function almost like a course sand.
What is often missing in discussions of soil profile parameters is effective
depth of rooting. Agonizing over a small difference in the water retention
curves may not help if the soil depth is incorrect.
My question is what have people done to estimate the effective depth of
rooting, including accounting for management (tillage) effects?
Best regards,
Jeff White
