DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:    This is a non-tenure track position (75%
research, 25% extension) in the Agricultural and Biological Engineering
Department, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of
Florida.  The person in this position will conduct research and coordinate
efforts among institutions in the Southeastern Climate Consortium (SECC), a
Regional Integrated Science Application Center (RISA) funded by NOAA and
other agencies, with researchers currently located at the University of
Florida, Florida State University, University of Miami, and the University
of Georgia. The SECC conducts research aimed at reducing climate and weather
risks in agriculture and natural resources management in Florida and other
Southeastern States and works with the Cooperative Extension Service and
other agencies to provide climate information to stakeholders in
agriculture, forestry, and water resources management.  He/she will be
responsible for conducting research related to climate variability, for
assessing climate impacts on agriculture and water resources, and for
developing methods and computer tools for applying climate forecasts and
information to improve decisions and policies across the SE USA. He/she will
develop climate products that integrate agriculture and water resources
management at regional to state and farm scales. The person in this position
will represent the SECC in a range of settings to communicate our program to
stakeholders and funding agencies, and take the lead in preparing and
coordinating reports to NOAA and other funding agencies. He/she will be
responsible for maintaining a web site for the SECC as well as a newsletter
providing climate outlooks for the region. He/she will coordinate activities
and actively participate in research planning and proposal development in
the SECC. This is a 12-month position, renewable depending on availability
of funding and job performance.  The faculty member will actively
participate in graduate education by chairing graduate committees, serving
on graduate committees, supervising thesis and dissertation research, and
publishing the results with their graduate students.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. in Engineering (i.e., Agricultural and
Biological or Water Resource Engineering), Agronomy, Environmental Science,
Agricultural Economics or a closely related field is required with training
in weather/climate effects on agricultural and/or water resource systems and
in human decision making.  The successful candidate must have excellent
communication (oral and writing), organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Experience in interdisciplinary research and systems analysis is required.
He/she must also have proficiency in computer tools routinely used in
communication and be willing to travel to ensure effective coordination
among SECC institutions and effective communication with stakeholders, NOAA
and other funding agencies, and other researchers (including those in other
RISAs). Successful experience in grant writing is desirable.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: The Agricultural and Biological Engineering
Department is a unit in the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences
(IFAS) at the University of Florida and has diverse teaching, research and
extension education programs with 31 faculty members located on the
Gainesville campus, 5 faculty located across the state at research and
education centers, 10 courtesy faculty and 22 support personnel (see website
<http://www.agen.ufl.edu>).  The University of Florida is a Land-Grant
institution with an enrollment in excess of 46,000 students on the
Gainesville campus and a member of the Association of American Universities.
IFAS includes 20 academic units, 5 interdisciplinary centers, 14 research
and educational centers throughout the state, and Cooperative Extension
units in each of Florida's 67 counties and the Seminole Tribe.  IFAS, one of
the nation's largest agricultural and natural resources research and
education organizations, is administered by a Vice President and five deans:
the Dean of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the Dean for
Extension, the Dean for Research, the Dean for the College of Veterinary
Medicine and the Director for the School of Natural Resources and
Environment.
