The "Steeles" reference cited may refer to Matthew Steeles' "American
Campaigns" which is accompanied by an atlas showing Civil War military
campaigns. (The maps in this atlas were also used in volume 1 of the"
West Point Atlas")

I would hazard a guess that, for instance, the Virginia Historical
Society's Library (http://www.vahistorical.org/research/main.htm), in
Richmond VA, could provide a helpful reply . . .

I have a patron who is trying to decipher a reference in the book:
Virginia place names: derivations, historical uses. by Hanson, Raus
McDill. (Verona, Va., McClure Press, 1969)
The book cites a source called "Steeles" but there is no mention of it
in the bibliography. Does anyone have any idea what this Steeles source
could be?
Thanks,
