Subject: Decimal degrees in OCLC

------------------
To those who catalog on OCLC, this is in response to the discussion from
December 10 on recording coordinates as decimal degrees.
Until OCLC changes the validation rules, OCLC users can only record
coordinates in field 034 based on the form 'hdddmmss' (hemisphere,
degrees,
minutes and seconds). I checked with my colleagues in Metadata
Standards &
Quality and they reported that we have not yet received the MARC 21
Update
that would include the change from MARBI Proposal 2002-09 (passed at
Midwinder 2002). Therefore, I cannot give you a date for
implementation.
As soon as I have some information on our plans for this change, I will
post
the information to this discussion list.
If you have any questions about this please feel free to contact me
directly.
