In addition to GH's point, make the range wider (first-last) especially if you're considering a rainfed scenario, where precip is the only source of soil moisture.  Usually, you'll have a better chance meeting the criteria of auto-sowing with a wider range of the sowing date window.

your first and last dates of your planting date window using PFIRST
and PLAST. These are based on the YRDOY format.
