Colleagues

Any help you can provide in ensuring this announcement reaches suitably qualified candidates would be very much appreciated. We think this is an exciting opportunity for a young, talented modeller to get directly involved in policy modeling and (there's always a downside) mix with lots of smart economists (oxymoron?)

regards to all, and apologies for any cross-posting

Stan

JOB SUMMARY

The Environment and Production Technology Division of IFPRI seeks to recruit a highly-skilled and highly-motivated specialist in biophysical modeling with primary emphasis on cropping system simulation modeling; experience with land degradation or land use change modeling would also be highly advantageous. This is a two-year, fixed-term, renewable appointment within the Environment and Production Technology Division, and the successful candidate will report to the research theme leader. This is an internationally-recruited position, based at IFPRI headquarters in Washington, DC, which will require some international travel.

The successful candidate will join a world class, interdisciplinary research team undertaking research on the strategic evaluation of global food systems, under a new IFPRI program on "Global Food and Natural Resources: Strategies and Policies for Adapting to Global Change". The team, who already apply a wide range of GIS/spatial analysis, production systems, economic modeling, scenario building and policy analysis data and tools, is embarking on a variety of exciting research activities. This includes a set of strategic assessments of the potential poverty and hunger alleviating potential of improved crop productivity in the developing world, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The successful candidate would provide key inputs and contribute to major deliverables for this ambitious study.

While global in its perspective and many of its data and analysis needs, the team will place special emphasis on the search for improved food security, nutrition, poverty, and ecosystem service outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. Demonstrable knowledge and analytical experience with resource conditions and smallholder production systems of relevance to these regions is, therefore, a particular advantage. A professional interest in soil-mediated constraints and potential interventions would also be advantageous.

Required Qualifications

- PhD (completed or for imminent completion) involving research that applies crop simulation (e.g., APSIM, DSSAT or equivalent models) and GIS tools to agriculture or natural resource related development issues.

- Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, in English

- Demonstrated track record of written research outputs describing data, tools and relevant analytical applications

- Motivated, creative, and able to flourish in an interdisciplinary and intercultural team

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience in land use change and/or soil degradation modeling

- Work experience in Sub-Saharan Africa or South Asia

- Technical skills in working with large datasets (e.g. either database or procedural language programming)

IFPRI is one of the international agricultural research institutes organized under the umbrella of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR).
