                        CROP PHYSIOLOGIST POSITION
                      BEAN PROGRAM, CIAT HEADQUARTERS
 
 
CROP PHYSIOLOGIST. Work within a multidiciplinary team seeking ways to
increase productivity of Phaseolus vulgaris common bean, emphasizing crop
improvement. Research involves projects on improving adaptation of beans to
water deficits and low soil fertility, understanding photoperiod/temperature
interactions, and increasing yield potential. Emphasis is on identifying
plant traits and mechanisms to improve breeding methodologies. Continue
on-going work with crop simulation models such as BEANGRO. The physiologist
is expected to work closely with bean breeders at headquarters; provide
backup research and technical support to bean outreach staff in Latin America
and Africa; produce scientific and technical reports and training materials;
strengthen research capacity of national programs through training and
collaborative research projects; establish effective collaboration with other
advanced research organizations. The Physiologist is also expected to
participated in cross-center activities that relate to his/her expertise. The
position is based at CIAT's headquarters in Cali, Colombia and
reports directly to the Bean Program Leader.  Require PhD in biological or
agricultural science with specialization in crop/stress physiology and
familiarity with plant breeding and genetics; proficiency in statistical
analysis and computers; willingness to travel internationally; writing
and speaking fluency in English; knowledge of Spanish is desirable.  CIAT
offers an internationally competitive salary paid in U.S. dollars and a
