Shooting from the hip here...  I seem to recall that there was an online
(pdf?) version of a publication or report that included old survey symbols
and there meanings.  I thought it was once available via the NOAA historic
nautical charts site, but it's not there (if indeed it ever was).  I have a
patron who has an 1881 chart and would like to know what kind of vegetation
some of the symbols refer to.
