I made a point file a few months ago using fields from the GNIS. One of
the fields is 'populated place'. Looking back at that file, I don't see
anything that would indicate population. But if you do find an
uber-text list of cities + population, you should be able to join it to
the uber-list of place names and our will pop your shapefile.
You can download plain text of the full GNIS from an ftp site--I can
scare that up for you if you'd like.
