1. Mark your calendars for ICE Open House: ArtScience
Wednesday, September 28 at 6:00 PM
ICE Room, Tanner Building Room 101

An evening of informal presentations featuring Dr. Jason Cantarella,
Laleh Mehran, and a window installation by Amanda Burk.

Dr. Jason Cantarella, Professor of Mathematics, will screen digital animation from the Math and
Visualization workshop and share his work with geometric knot theory. Lamar Dodd School of Art
Professor Laleh Mehran will select key contemporary works at the intersection of art and science
and discuss her genre-blurring series, The Xerces Society. Meet Amanda Burk, a graduate
candidate in Printmaking, and explore her interior/exterior window installation at ICE.

All are welcome.

2. Sam Hazo Poetry Reading
Monday, September 19, 3:30 PM, 265 Park Hall.
Samuel Hazo, author of books of poetry, fiction, essays, and plays, is the director of the
International Poetry Forum in Pittsburgh, where he also is McAnulty Distinguished Professor of
English Emeritus at Duquesne University. His latest books are "The Holy Surprise of Right
Now" (poetry), "The Rest is Prose" (essays), "Stills" (fiction), Feather (play), "As They Sail" (poetry),
and "Spying for God" (essays). His translations include Denis de Rougemont’s "The Growl of
Deeper Waters", Nadia Tueni’s "Lebanon: Twenty Poems for One Love", and Adonis’ "The Pages of
Day and Night". He has been a National Book Award finalist and was chosen the first state poet of
the commonwealth of Pennsylvania by Governor Robert Casey in 1993, a position he held until

3. Visiting Artist Lecture:  Enrique Chagoya.
Tuesday, September 20, 5:30 PM. 101 Student Learing Center
Enrique Chagoya is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Stanford University. His work is
shown widely and is in the collections of the LA County Museum, the National Museum of
American Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, and the New York Public Library, among others. Sponsored by the Lamar Dodd
School of Art Visiting Artist/Scholar Series.

4. ANNA IN THE TROPICS by Nilo Cruz.

Where: Seney -Stovall Chapel
A lush romantic drama about Cuban-American cigar workers at the dawn of the depression. This
2003 Pulitzer Prize winner tells a story of passion, seduction and the struggle to maintain
traditions in a new land and changing times. Features live Cuban music.

5.  Center for Humanities and Arts Cinema Roundtable.
Friday, September 23, 4:00 PM. 101 Student Learning Center
Richard Neupert, Department of Theatre and Film Studies, moderates this illustrated roundtable
discussion on War of the Worlds: Science Fiction Films Today. Sponsored by the Center for
Humanities and Arts.

2005-2006 ICE Project Grant Call for Proposals

ICE is seeking proposals for projects to be initiated during the 2005-2006 academic year. Selected
proposals may receive awards up to $2,500, technical and creative support, and assistance with
the presentation of completed projects.

Eligibility
Lead applicant must be a full-time faculty member or a full-time student at the University of
Georgia. ICE encourages collaborative proposals that include faculty and students from more than
one discipline or academic department and/or professionals from outside the University of
Georgia.

Resources
Production, exhibition, and performance facilities of the University of Georgia. ICE will lend
assistance in seeking appropriate venues for exhibitions and performances off campus to give
successful projects regional, national, and international exposure. Web-based projects and
publications can be hosted by ICE.

Deadline
Completed proposal must be received by 12:00 PM on Monday, October 17, 2005.

Award Criteria
1. Intellectual and artistic merit
2. Feasibility of the project under sponsorship of ICE
3. Extent of collaborative and interdisciplinary activity
4. Degree of innovation
5. Potential for future funding and development.
