The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks a first rate
scientific leader committed to poverty alleviation and wishing to make a
difference as

Research Director - Targeting Research and Development Opportunities

ILRI is a not-for-profit international organisation with a global mandate to
conduct livestock research. ILRI and its partners contribute high-quality
science and capacity building to the global effort to reduce poverty and
make sustainable development possible for poor livestock keepers, their
families and communities. ILRI has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, a
principal site in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and staff and activities in other
locations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

The position: ILRI seeks a Director to lead one of its five research themes
(Theme 1) investigating how livestock research and development can be better
targeted for maximizing poverty reduction. ILRI has developed an
international reputation for global mapping studies on poverty and livestock
links. Two major thrusts of this research theme will be to understand how
livestock can and do contribute to sustainable livelihoods in the changing
global environment and to identify technological and policy interventions
that can have demonstrable impact on poverty alleviation. Research outputs
are expected to improve the focus and contribute to the impact of livestock
research and development by a wide range of international, regional and
national organisations, including ILRI. Research tools and methods to be
used by the research team include:
·       predictive modelling using systems analysis and geographical
information systems to assess the impacts of key drivers of change;
·       analysis and modelling of the role of livestock in crop-livestock,
pastoral and urban systems from household to regional scale;
·       poverty intervention mapping; and
·       economic and environmental impact assessment.
As leader and manager of the research theme, the Director will have primary
responsibility for developing the vision, goals, and strategies of the
theme, leading resource mobilization, and managing the scientific team and
its partnerships to ensure that research outputs contribute to poverty
reduction. He/She will be a member of the ILRI's research-management team,
contributing to the strategies and direction of ILRI's research, and
representing the institute in a variety of research, investor and partner
forums. This position reports to the Deputy Director General - Research and
will be based at ILRI's headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya with frequent
international travel.

The successful candidate will:
·       be an accomplished and innovative researcher who has strong research
management experience;
·       have a PhD in a natural, environmental, social, or agricultural
science, or related field;
·       have considerable research experience in the analysis and
understanding of agricultural systems in the developing world, particularly
using approaches integrated across disciplines, systems and scales;
·       be strongly committed to research and development for poverty
alleviation; and
·       have demonstrated success in managing multi-disciplinary teams and
partnerships and attracting substantial research funding.
We are looking for a visionary leader with highly developed management
skills, committed to working in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural
environment and able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.


Conditions:
The employment contract will be for a renewable three-year term. Salary is
paid in US dollars.  ILRI provides excellent benefits including

benefits.  Generous allowances toward relocation, housing, home leave
travel, dependents' education, and annual leave are also provided.
