PROFESSIONAL VACANCY AT FAO (Rome, Italy) AS NATURAL RESOURCES OFFICER
(AGROMETEOROLOGY)

GRADE LEVEL: P-4
DUTY STATION: Rome
ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT: Climate, Energy and Tenure Division, NRC Natural
Resources Management and Environment Department
DURATION: Fixed Term: 3 years with possible extension

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the overall guidance of the Director, NRC, and the supervision of the
Senior Natural Resources Officer (Agrometeorology), the incumbent will
contribute to the division's work on climate variability and climate change,
climate impact assessment and environmental monitoring. In particular,
will:
* provide scientific and technical support on climate impact assessment and
in particular on agrometeorological applications into the regular and the
field programmes;
* ensure the continuous operation of the agrometeorological crop monitoring
activities, as a specific input to the Global Information and Early Warning
System on Food and Agriculture (GIEWS);
* organize the systematic collection of agricultural information and improve
the present models expressing crop-weather relationships, through the
development of existing and the creation of innovative software;
* ensure the updating of the FAO real-time meteorological and
agrometeorological databases (FAOClim-NET) and provide for continuous
updating of its DB management system as well as the improvement and
diversification of the derived agrometeorological information;
* participate in the formulation, implementation, technical backstopping and
training activities of field projects related to climate variability and
climate change, with particular reference to the agrometeorological component
of national and regional Early Warning Systems for Food Security;
* follow-up on user's requests for agrometeorological information, data,
methods and tools for analysis and interpretation of the impacts;
* liaise with other FAO Teams on all questions dealing with the
agrometeorological applications including the use of remotely sensed data;
 * provide technical support in the preparation of technical meetings,
workshops and symposia for the transfer of knowledge and information on
climate impact assessment and particularly on agrometeorology;
* provide scientific and technical support to interagency coordination work
(WMO, incl. CAgM and WCC3 follow up, UNEP, UNFCCC, IPCC, UNESCO, WFP, WB, EC)
for cooperation on climate impact assessment related activities;
* provide supervision of staff and ad-hoc supervision of and liaision with
consultants;
* perform other related duties, as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:
* University degree in agronomy, meteorology, climatology, or related
scientific field with further specialization in agrometeorology, data
processing techniques and computer programming applied to agrometeorology
* Seven years of relevant experience in agrometeorology in developing
countries, with specific experience in the analysis of plant-weather
relationships for the purpose of climate impact assessment on agriculture,
crop monitoring and crop yield forecasting
* Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of
one of the other two

SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:
* Extent and relevance of knowledge of the science and techniques of
agrometeorology
* Extent and relevance of practical experience (at international level and in
developing countries) of agrometeorological instruments, methods and tools
(incl. software) used in climate and crop data observation and collection,
data processing, acquisition and their analysis for climate impact
assessments
* Demonstrated supervisory and managerial skills and experience to organize
and coordinate cross-sectoral work and field projects relevant to climate
variability and climate change
* Quality of both oral and written communication skills on technical issues
* Extent of experience with UN, intergovernmental and international
organizations in technical assistance mechanisms and procedures
* Extent of linguistic skills in the official languages of FAO: Arabic,
Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish Please note that all candidates
should possess computer/word processing skills and should be capable of
working with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.

* The length of appointment for internal FAO candidates will be established
in accordance with applicable policies pertaining to the extension of
appointments
