PhD position (Crop Science / Modelling) in Tanzania/Uganda
(University of Bonn, Germany)

The Institute of Crop Science and Resource Conservation at the
Agricultural Faculty of the University of Bonn seeks a PhD student for
an interdiscplinary research project “Wetlands in East Africa:
Reconciling future food production with environmental protection".
She/he will conduct field trials in collaboration with other partners of
the project to determine and model yield gaps in rice and maize.
The PhD candidate must have a competitive MSc degree in agonomy or a
closely related field. Skills in agronomy, statistics and mathematics
must be well above average. Experiences in field experimentation and
applied crop modelling are important. Knowledge in computer programming
will be an advantage.

The candidate will be jointly supervised by the Department of Plant
Nutrition in the Tropics and Subtropics at Bonn University and Africa
Rice. She/he will be based in Bonn and is expected to stay extended
times in Tanzania and Uganda for managing field trials and data
collection. Willingness to integrate into a multi-discplininary research
team and a high level of self-motivation are essential requirements. A
high command of English is indispensible as the PhD student is expected
to publish in scientific journals. Basic communication skills in German
would be an additional advantage for international candidates.

The 3-year position is available immediately. The financial renumeration
is a stipend corresponding to the German salary level TV-L 13 (60%). The
application deadline is February 18, 2015. Please send your
applications (CV, certificates, and one-page motivation letter) as PDF
files to Prof. Dr. Langensiepen (Email:[log in to unmask])
