CIMMYT is seeking candidates to fill a newly established
position for a Soils Scientist within the Center's Natural
Resources Management Research Group (NRG) at CIMMYT's
headquarters near Mexico City.

BACKGROUND

CIMMYT is an internationally funded, nonprofit research and
training organization headquartered in Mexico and
affiliated with the Consultative Group on International
Agricultural Research (CGIAR). The Center's mission is to
help the poor in developing countries by increasing the
productivity, profitability and sustainability of maize-
and wheat-based systems while protecting natural resources.

THE POSITION

The Soils Scientist will have responsibilities related to
research and training, service and facilitation, and
management and representation. The Soils Scientist will
report to the Manager of the NRG.

        Research

The Soils Scientist will be expected to plan and execute a
program of strategic soils science research within an
integrated approach to natural resources management
research (NRMR). This research should be undertaken in
collaboration with NRG staff, should relate to maize- or
wheat-based systems in developing countries, and should:
- Contribute to an improved understanding of fundamental
processes of resource degradation and/or stagnating
productivity.
- Result in improved methods for soils science research
within an integrated approach to NRMR that features a
systems perspective and is suitable for use by national
agricultural research systems.
- Contribute to the development and testing of prototype
technologies that may have widespread application in
helping improve the productivity and sustainability of
well-defined maize- and wheat-based systems.

        Service, Facilitation, and Training

The Soils Scientist also will be expected to fulfill a
service, facilitation, and training function, aimed
particularly at CIMMYT outreach scientists and their
research partners. The selected scientist should:
- Provide disciplinary support and backstopping in soils
science to CIMMYT staff (and their research partners)
working in NRMR, especially outreach staff working with
systemwide or ecoregional initiatives, or with regional
networking projects.
- Facilitate suitable linkages between CIMMYT/ partner NRMR
activities, local soil science research institutions, and
advanced research institutes.
- Help upgrade the technical skills of NARS visiting
scientists through collaboration in Mexico-based NRMR
projects, and by helping with training programs dealing
with advanced research methods;
- Facilitate the sharing of information among CIMMYT
scientists and their research partners relative to soils
science within the broader NRMR process.

        Management and Representation

Finally, the scientist will be expected to help supervise
and evaluate consultants supporting CIMMYT's NRMR
endeavors; help obtain funding for CIMMYT's NRMR
activities; represent CIMMYT in selected external fora
dealing with NRMR; and be a contact person for visitors and
visiting scientists.

follows: a Ph.D. in soil science; a minimum of five years'
professional experience; an outstanding scientific record

water, nutrient, crop and/or systems modeling; a
demonstrated ability to conduct research with a systems
perspective; a commitment to collaboration with scientists
from other disciplines; a willingness to travel
extensively; excellent spoken and written English language
competence; and a demonstrated ability to attract
competitive research grants from external funding bodies.

In addition, the following qualifications are highly
desirable: an acquaintance with the development and use of
geographic information systems; an acquaintance with
ecological or environmental studies; spoken and written
Spanish language competence.

SELECTION PROCEDURES

All applications received before May 15, 1996 (or until the
position is filled) will be considered. CIMMYT is an equal
opportunity employer and strives for staff diversity in
gender and nationality. The Center makes a special effort
to accommodate the needs of dual-career couples. CIMMYT's
