We are pleased to announce this new TRAINING COURSE for all those with
maps in their care.

how to catalogue cartographic materials for libraries and archives

The Map Curators Group of the British Cartographic Society is holding a
training course on map cataloguing. The course is for all librarians,
archivists, curators in fact anyone who has maps in their care and who
wants to keep track of what they have.

*Wednesday 31 January Thursday 1 February 2007

*Description:
*The course will start after lunch on Wednesday 31 January and finish
the following afternoon.
Anyone who describes maps for catalogues or cartobibiographies; in
libraries, museums or archives; part or full-time will find this
course of interest.
/Cartographic materials: a manual of interpretation for AACR2/ and
/Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules/, (2nd edition revised) will be the
basis of instruction.
The course will cover all of the basics and will be invaluable to anyone
starting out in cataloguing. The more knowledgeable will also benefit
since there will be ample opportunity to raise specific problems through
questions and during the practical exercises.
In addition to handouts prepared by the speakers each delegate will also
receive:
* a natural scale indicator.
* a copy of the Map Curators Group Special Issue of /The
Cartographic Journal/ (42.3, 2005) which is devoted entirely to
map collections and how to look after them and which includes
articles on cataloguing printed cartographic materials and digital
geospatial data.
* their own copy to keep of: /Maps and related cartographic
materials : cataloging, classification, and bibliographic control/
