POSTDOC POSITION IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES
The Institute of Soil Ecology of the GSF - National Research Center
for Environment and Health, Neuherberg near Munich, Germany, is
searching candidates for a position connected with a research
project in environmental sciences.
Funding for the project is by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
The project is part of the Collaborative Research Program (DFG-SFB 607)
„Growth or defence against parasites ? Competition for ressources by plants
in agricultur and forestry"
Its aims are the modeling and simulation of plant growth and plant internal
allocation of carbon assimilates to plant organs under different environmental
conditions (higher atmospheric CO2 and O3 concentrations, plant competition
for space and nutrients, parasites). The model to be developed will be a
generic
growth model for wooden and herbal plants assuming similar mechanisms
explaining the effects of the different stresses on photosynthesis,
respiration,
nutrient uptake and growth. The algorithm shall be implemented into an existing
code for the simulation of terrestrial ecosystems (soil, vegetation,atmosphere)
which is written in C++.
The position is available since September 1, 1998 and has a term of three
years.
The ideal candidate has a degree in agronomy, forest science, biology, applied
physics or applied mathematics/scientific computing. He/She should have good
knowledge of the computer language C or C++, should be familiar with the use
of ANSI-C compilers and have strong interest in plant physiology.
Knowledge of the German language is not expected and only advantageous as
far as everyday life is concerned.
Salary is according to the German BAT IIa tariff. It depends on age and family
status. (A 25 year old unmarried person receives about DEM 66,000 / US$ 40,000
gross payment per annum.)
