The proceedings of the Third International Systems Approaches for
Agricultural Development (SAAD-III) symposium are available as PDF files at:

http://www.cipotato.org/training/SAADIII/index.htm

The Systems Approaches for Agricultural Development (SAAD) symposia provide
a forum for an international audience to present, discuss and exchange
information on methodologies used across disciplines and at multiple scales
to obtain a more integrated understanding of agricultural systems. The first
SAAD symposium, held at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok,
Thailand, in December 1991, brought together more than 150 scientists and
senior research leaders from 20 countries. Oral and poster presentations
illustrated how systems research and some of its tools (such as simulation
models) have been used to analyze constraints to agricultural production, to
define interactions at the farm and regional levels, and to improve
education, training and technology transfer. At the second SAAD symposium,
held at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Los Baņos,
Philippines, in December 1995, more than 200 participants from 32 countries
examined the link between the biophysical and social sciences for dealing
with complex issues at different scales, with a focus on understanding
system components and their interactions at field, farm, and regional
levels. Papers from the first two SAAD symposia have been published in the
journal Agricultural Systems and in the Kluwer Academic Publishers book
series entitled Systems approaches for sustainable agricultural development.

The third SAAD symposium was held at the Universidad Nacional Agraria La
Molina (UNALM), Lima, Peru, in November 1999. It was organized jointly by
UNALM, the International Potato Center (CIP), the International Consortium
for Agricultural Systems Applications (ICASA), the International Fertilizer
Development Center (IFDC), and the International Livestock Research
Institute (ILRI), and brought together more than 150 participants from 24
countries to present and discuss a wide range of topics on systems research
and systems applications. This CD-ROM (or web site) contains 79 papers that
were presented at the third SAAD symposium. All papers are grouped in five
major themes:

Theme 1: Modeling livestock production systems
Theme 2: Modeling crop production systems at the field level
Theme 3: Systems analysis at the farm level
Theme 4: Systems analysis at the regional level
Theme 5: A special session dedicated to ICASA approaches and tools

All SAAD-III participants will receive a CD-ROM with the proceedings.
Limited CDs are also available to others at cost. Please contact
