Thelma,
Here at the Illinois State Library we use flat pieces of wood and flat heavy
pieces of cardboard. Both are wide and long enough to cover the width of the
map and then we lay them at both ends for several days. Also after you
eventually shelve the maps in question, the weight of the maps on top of
them will serve to flatten them out.

We are looking for more efficient ways to flatten large rolled maps. Has
anyone designed or purchased any items that make it easier to initially roll
out a shipment of maps, or to subsequently add more maps to the stack? Our
current motley collection of large flat objects does the job, but requires
more effort than we wish. What do you find to be the optimal dimensions for
weights?
Reply to me directly and I will summarize if there is interest.
Thanks,
Thelma Thompson
